Plot Summary

Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd) is the cool, calculating right-hand man to Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy), a powerful political boss who runs the city’s machine with a mixture of charm and muscle. Madvig decides to bet his political future on an alliance with reform senator Ralph Henry (Moroni Olsen), backing the senator’s re-election campaign in exchange for respectability. Complicating matters, Madvig has fallen for the senator’s beautiful daughter Janet Henry (Veronica Lake), despite the vast social gulf between a street-level boss and political aristocracy.

When the senator’s dissolute son Taylor Henry is found murdered, suspicion immediately falls on Madvig — the dead man had been dating Madvig’s sister, and Madvig had publicly threatened him. Ed knows his boss is innocent but has no proof. As he investigates, he discovers a web of corruption extending from gambling kingpin Nick Varna (Joseph Calleia), who wants Madvig destroyed, to dirty politicians playing both sides. Varna’s enforcer Jeff (William Bendix) captures Ed and subjects him to a savage, prolonged beating to make him turn against Madvig — one of the most brutally realistic torture scenes in 1940s cinema.

Ed survives and turns the investigation toward the real killer, uncovering that the murder’s true motive lies not in gangland rivalry but in the Henry family’s own dark secrets. Janet Henry, initially cold toward Ed, gradually falls for his quiet integrity and willingness to sacrifice everything for loyalty. The climax reveals the murderer in a devastating twist that shatters the political alliance and forces Ed to choose between protecting his boss and telling the truth.
