Plot Summary

Dove Linkhorn is a restless young Texan who drifts into Depression-era New Orleans searching for his lost love, Hallie Gerard, a refined and beautiful woman he knew before hard times separated them. His journey takes him through the hardscrabble edges of American society, where he encounters Kitty Twist, a streetwise and fiercely independent young woman who attaches herself to him despite his single-minded pursuit of Hallie.
