Plot Summary

Edith Phillips (Bette Davis) is a struggling bar owner who has spent years resenting her identical twin sister, Margaret DeLorca (also Bette Davis). Margaret married the wealthy man Edith once loved, and Edith has seethed with jealousy ever since. When the twins reunite at the funeral of Margaret’s husband, old wounds tear open. Edith lures Margaret to her apartment, murders her, and stages the scene to look like a suicide — then assumes Margaret’s identity to claim her luxurious lifestyle.

But life as Margaret proves far more dangerous than Edith anticipated. Margaret’s lover Tony Collins (Peter Lawford) grows suspicious of subtle changes in behavior. Sergeant Jim Hobbson (Karl Malden), a devoted admirer of the real Edith, investigates the apparent suicide and senses something deeply wrong. Even Margaret’s loyal Great Dane seems to reject the imposter. As secrets unravel and the walls close in, Edith discovers that Margaret’s glamorous existence concealed dark secrets of its own — leading to a devastating twist that proves murder and identity theft carry an inescapable price.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Originally shot in black and white, Dead Ringer relied on stark contrasts and shadowy cinematography to build its tense, noir-inspired atmosphere. This restored and colorized version preserves every frame of Henreid’s careful direction while presenting the entire film in colour with era-accurate hues that bring new depth to the visual storytelling.

Margaret’s opulent mansion glows with warm golds and rich burgundies, while Edith’s dingy bar is rendered in muted, somber tones — reinforcing the stark divide between the twins’ worlds. The colorization reveals details the original black and white photography concealed: the contrast between Margaret’s elegant wardrobe and Edith’s plain attire, the warm tones of period-accurate interiors, and the cold, clinical lighting of the film’s most suspenseful sequences.

This is not a streaming rental — it is your permanent digital copy. Once purchased, you can watch Dead Ringer on any device, as many times as you wish, with no expiration date and no DRM restrictions.

Historical Significance

Released in February 1964, Dead Ringer arrived during a remarkable late-career resurgence for Bette Davis, following the massive success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). At 56, Davis proved she remained one of Hollywood’s most commanding screen presences, delivering a technically demanding dual performance that required meticulous split-screen photography and precise timing.

Director Paul Henreid, Davis’s co-star in the legendary Casablanca (1942), crafted a taut thriller that blended psychological suspense with gothic melodrama. Cinematographer Ernest Haller, who had photographed Davis in Jezebel (1938) and Mr. Skeffington (1944), brought decades of experience to the film’s moody visual palette. Dead Ringer remains an essential entry in the 1960s cycle of grande dame horror-thrillers and a testament to Bette Davis’s extraordinary range as a classic movie actress.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What makes Dead Ringer different from What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

The dual-role performance and noir-influenced mystery plot give the film a distinct character, making it a rewarding companion piece rather than a simple retread.
