Plot Summary
Cicely Doyle (Margaret Sullavan) is a rising Broadway actress whose talent and determination are earning her a rapidly growing reputation in the competitive world of New York theater. She falls deeply in love with Christopher Tyler (James Stewart), an ambitious young newspaper correspondent whose passion for journalism matches her own dedication to the stage. They marry in a romantic whirlwind, but their careers constantly pull them in opposite directions — Christopher is sent on dangerous foreign assignments to cover political upheavals and international crises while Cicely’s increasingly successful theatrical career demands she remain in New York, where rehearsals, performances, and the relentless demands of Broadway leave little room for the life they dreamed of sharing. Their brief reunions between Christopher’s overseas postings are bittersweet, filled with the intensity of lovers who know each separation might be their last, and the strain of long-distance marriage begins to take a visible toll on both of them. When journalist friend Tommy Abbott (Ray Milland), who has secretly loved Cicely for years with a quiet devotion he has never dared to express, learns that Christopher is seriously ill but hiding it from his wife to avoid burdening her with worry, Tommy faces an agonizing dilemma between loyalty to his friend and his desire to protect the woman he loves. As the years pass and the separations take their emotional toll, all three must confront the painful question of whether love can survive when life keeps pulling people apart and whether the sacrifices demanded by ambition are worth the price paid in human happiness. When Christopher’s illness becomes critical and can no longer be concealed, the carefully maintained facades crumble and the truth about love, sacrifice, and what truly matters in life finally emerges with devastating clarity.

Historical Significance
Next Time We Love was James Stewart’s first leading role and the first of three films he made with Margaret Sullavan, with whom he had a deep personal connection dating back to their theater days at the University Players in Massachusetts. Stewart later credited Sullavan with teaching him how to act in front of a camera, saying she showed him that film acting was about truthfulness and understatement rather than the broad gestures he had learned on stage. Their natural chemistry and genuine affection for each other gives the film’s romantic scenes an authenticity that transcends typical Hollywood romance. Ray Milland, years before his Oscar-winning performance in The Lost Weekend, provides strong and sensitive support in the thankless role of the loyal friend who suffers in silence. The film was based on a story by Ursula Parrott, a popular novelist of the era who specialized in modern stories about the challenges faced by ambitious women. Director Edward H. Griffith guides the three leads through their emotional paces with a light but assured touch that allows the natural chemistry of the performers to carry the drama. The colorization brings warm visual beauty to this early and essential showcase for one of cinema’s greatest actors at the very dawn of his legendary career.
