Plot Summary

On a beautiful Tahitian island, Henry Doorn (Ramon Novarro) lives an idyllic life of swimming, fishing, and carefree happiness. Born of a European father and Polynesian mother, Henry has inherited his father’s considerable coconut plantation but lives as a native, rejecting Western conventions in favour of the natural, joyful island life he loves. He is handsome, strong, charming, and utterly content — a man in paradise.

Henry’s peaceful existence is disrupted by the arrival of Donn Doorn, a cunning, unscrupulous European trader who discovers that young Tito (Dorothy Janis), a beautiful island girl Henry has known and protected since childhood, is actually the heir to a valuable property. The trader begins scheming to marry Tito to gain control of her inheritance, using manipulation and Western legal tricks that Henry cannot easily counter.

As Henry awakens to his romantic feelings for Tito — feelings that have been growing from childhood friendship into genuine love — he must also confront the trader’s schemes, learn to navigate the Western legal and commercial world he has rejected, and find a way to protect both Tito and their island paradise from exploitation. The film builds to a dramatic climax involving a dangerous sea journey and a confrontation between Henry’s natural Polynesian values and the cynical commercial ethics of the European interloper, as Henry fights for love, justice, and the preservation of the paradise world that colonialism threatens to destroy.
