Plot Summary

Lieutenant Duke Halliday is in serious trouble. A military payroll of $300,000 has vanished, and all the evidence points to him. The real thief is Jim Fiske, a smooth-talking con man who has disappeared into Mexico with the money, leaving Duke to face court-martial and prison. Duke’s only hope is to find Fiske and recover the money before the Army catches up with him, so he crosses the border into Mexico on a desperate pursuit.

Hot on Duke’s trail is Captain Vincent Blake, a relentless Army investigator who is convinced of Duke’s guilt and determined to bring him back in chains. Blake is competent, aggressive, and not interested in listening to Duke’s protests of innocence. As far as Blake is concerned, the case is closed — he just needs to catch his man.

In Mexico, Duke encounters Joan Graham, a beautiful American woman who has her own reasons for wanting to find Jim Fiske — the charming swindler conned her out of her savings before disappearing with the payroll. Joan is tough, resourceful, and furious, and her desire for revenge makes her a natural ally for Duke. Together, they form an uneasy partnership as they track Fiske through the mountains and villages of Mexico.

The chase becomes a three-way pursuit — Duke and Joan chasing Fiske, Blake chasing Duke, and Fiske trying to stay ahead of everyone while keeping the money. The Mexican landscape provides constant opportunities for ambush, escape, and misdirection as the pursuit races through dusty towns, mountain passes, and tropical valleys. The tension is punctuated by crackling dialogue and the undeniable romantic chemistry between Duke and Joan, building to a climactic confrontation where all parties converge.

Historical Significance

The Big Steal reunited Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer just two years after their iconic pairing in the film noir masterpiece Out of the Past, and their chemistry is equally magnetic here despite the lighter tone. The film was directed by Don Siegel in what was an early assignment for the man who would later direct Dirty Harry, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and other classics. Mitchum filmed the movie while awaiting trial on a marijuana charge that threatened to destroy his career, lending an edge of genuine tension to his performance. The Mexican location shooting was extensive and gives the film a visual authenticity rare for the era. Through colorization, this superbly entertaining chase film is preserved for modern audiences.
