Plot Summary
In 1854, newly graduated West Point officers J.E.B. Stuart and George Armstrong Custer are assigned to frontier duty in Bleeding Kansas, a territory being torn apart by the escalating and increasingly violent conflict over slavery that is pushing the nation toward civil war. Stuart, a dashing Virginian with natural leadership qualities, and Custer, his loyal and adventurous friend, quickly discover that their greatest challenge is not the harsh frontier itself but the charismatic and dangerously fanatical abolitionist John Brown.
Brown is leading armed raids across the Kansas-Missouri border, attacking pro-slavery settlements and freeing slaves through increasingly violent methods that horrify both sides of the political divide. His followers view him as a holy prophet sent to destroy the sin of slavery; his opponents see him as a murderous lunatic. Stuart and Custer, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, are ordered to maintain peace in the territory while also competing for the affections of the beautiful Kit Carson Holliday, daughter of Cyrus Holliday, the visionary railroad builder whose Santa Fe line depends on Kansas remaining stable.
As Brown’s raids grow bolder and his following swells, he conceives a plan of breathtaking ambition: he will seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, arm thousands of slaves, and ignite a massive uprising that will end slavery through armed revolution. When Brown and his raiders capture the arsenal and take hostages, Stuart volunteers for the dangerous mission to deliver the surrender ultimatum, and the subsequent military assault on the engine house at Harpers Ferry becomes one of the most dramatic set pieces in classic Hollywood. This classic movie is a sweeping adventure set against one of the most turbulent chapters in American history.

Historical Significance
Santa Fe Trail was one of Warner Bros.’ biggest and most expensive productions of 1940, bringing together the spectacularly popular team of Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and director Michael Curtiz, who had previously collaborated on such classics as Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Raymond Massey’s intense, blazing-eyed portrayal of John Brown was considered one of the most powerful villain performances of its era and earned him widespread critical acclaim. The film also features Ronald Reagan in one of his most prominent screen roles, playing George Custer decades before his career in politics led him to the White House. While the film takes significant creative liberties with historical events, it captures the volatile atmosphere of Bleeding Kansas and the explosive events at Harpers Ferry with considerable dramatic power. Through professional colorization, this epic western adventure reaches new audiences.
