Plot Summary

It is the final year of the Civil War, and the Confederacy is losing. Captain Lafe Barstow leads eight soldiers on a dangerous secret mission across the Rocky Mountains — their orders are to contact Cole Smith, a notorious outlaw operating in California, and persuade him to lead his gang in guerrilla operations that would open a new western front and divert Union resources from the decisive eastern campaigns.

The mission is compromised when Barstow’s party encounters a Union stagecoach under attack by Shoshone warriors. Despite their mission requiring absolute secrecy, the Confederates cannot stand by and watch civilians die.
