Plot Summary
As the Civil War reaches its climax, Union Captain Kerry Bradford (Errol Flynn) escapes from a Confederate prison camp commanded by Captain Vance Irby (Randolph Scott). During his escape, Bradford encounters the beautiful saloon singer Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins), who helps him without revealing her true loyalty — she is secretly a Confederate sympathiser with deep personal connections to the Southern cause.
Returning to Union lines, Bradford is given a critical mission: intelligence reports indicate that the Confederacy plans to smuggle five million dollars in gold from the Virginia City mines to Richmond, where it would finance a last desperate push to continue the war. Bradford must travel to Virginia City, Nevada, identify the gold shipment, and prevent it from reaching Confederate hands.
In Virginia City, Bradford discovers that his former captor, Vance Irby, is the Confederate agent responsible for the gold convoy. The two honourable enemies face each other again — their mutual respect complicated by the discovery that they are both in love with Julia, whose divided loyalties mirror the larger tragedy of Americans fighting Americans. The rivalry between Bradford and Irby is conducted with a chivalric code that acknowledges their shared humanity even as duty demands they oppose each other.
The gold convoy launches across the treacherous Nevada desert, with Bradford and Union forces in pursuit while bandits led by the ruthless John Murrell (Humphrey Bogart) plot to steal the treasure for themselves. The journey becomes a three-way chase through magnificent desert landscapes, with the gold’s fate hanging in the balance as Union loyalty, Confederate honour, and outlaw greed collide in spectacular action sequences that showcase Curtiz’s legendary ability to orchestrate large-scale cinematic excitement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is Humphrey Bogart really in this?
A: Yes, though in an unusual role as a Mexican bandit leader — a casting choice that Bogart himself was reportedly unhappy about. Despite this, his natural screen intensity brings menace and interest to every scene he appears in.
Q: How does this compare to other Errol Flynn westerns?
A: It is a worthy companion to Dodge City and They Died with Their Boots On, sharing their epic scale, spectacular action, and Flynn’s irresistible charisma. The Civil War setting gives it additional dramatic weight and historical interest.
Q: Is the Civil War history accurate?
A: The film takes significant dramatic liberties with history, but the general concept of Confederate efforts to secure western gold was a real historical phenomenon. The film is best enjoyed as thrilling entertainment inspired by real events rather than as documentary history.
