Plot Summary
Jeff McCloud was once the greatest bronc rider on the rodeo circuit — a champion whose courage and skill made him a legend among cowboys. But years of punishment have taken their toll, and when the film opens, Jeff is a spent force, limping back to the small Texas ranch where he grew up, only to find it now owned by strangers. He retrieves a small cache of money and mementos he had hidden as a child, a poignant reminder of the gap between his youthful dreams and his current reality.
Jeff falls in with Wes Merritt, a young ranch hand who works on the property and dreams of making enough money on the rodeo circuit to buy a small ranch of his own and settle down with his practical and determined wife Louise. Jeff agrees to teach Wes the tricks of the trade, sharing the hard-won knowledge that once made him a champion.
Under Jeff’s coaching, Wes begins to win, and the prize money starts to accumulate. But success on the circuit brings new temptations — the adulation of crowds, the attention of buckle bunnies, the intoxication of living on the edge of danger — and Wes begins to change. The modest goal of buying a ranch gives way to the addiction of competition and the seductive excitement of the rodeo life.
Louise watches her husband’s transformation with growing alarm, recognizing in Wes the same reckless trajectory that destroyed Jeff. She blames Jeff for leading her husband astray, and a complex triangle of loyalty, resentment, and unspoken attraction develops among the three characters. The film builds toward a devastating climax as the human cost of the rodeo life becomes inescapable.
