Plot Summary

Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a recently divorced woman of luminous beauty and devastating emotional vulnerability, arrives in Reno, Nevada, adrift and searching for meaning. She meets Gay Langland (Clark Gable), an ageing cowboy who refuses to work for wages or live by anyone else’s rules — a romantic anachronism clinging to a vanishing ideal of masculine independence in a West that has been fenced, paved, and commodified.

Gay introduces Roslyn to his friends: Guido (Eli Wallach), a widowed mechanic and failed pilot haunted by his dead wife, and Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift), a battered, gentle rodeo rider whose body and spirit have been broken by years of being thrown from horses and bulls. These three damaged, rootless men are all drawn to Roslyn’s warmth, beauty, and genuine compassion, and for a brief, fragile moment, the four misfits create something resembling a family in Guido’s unfinished house outside Reno.

But the illusion shatters when the men take Roslyn along on their annual mustang hunt in the Nevada desert. The wild mustangs — once captured for saddle horses — are now worth only a few cents a pound as dog food, and the degrading, brutal business of lassoing the terrified animals from a speeding truck across the desert lakebed reveals the gap between the cowboys’ romantic self-image and the harsh commercial reality of their existence. Roslyn, unable to bear the suffering of the horses, begs Gay to release them. The confrontation between Roslyn’s compassion and Gay’s pride forces both to confront who they truly are.

Cast & Crew

Director: John Huston
Stars: Clark Gable gives the finest, most deeply felt performance of his legendary career as Gay Langland, projecting an ageing lion’s dignity, tenderness, and fierce pride in a role that serves as an extraordinary farewell. Marilyn Monroe is devastating as Roslyn — this is not a performance but a raw exposure of her own vulnerability, sensitivity, and beauty, making it the most personal and powerful work of her career. Montgomery Clift is heartbreakingly fragile as Perce, and Eli Wallach is superb as the hollow Guido.

Historical Significance

Released in 1961, The Misfits is one of cinema’s most legendarily poignant productions. It was Clark Gable’s final film — he died of a heart attack days after shooting completed. It was Marilyn Monroe’s last completed film before her death in 1962. Montgomery Clift would die in 1966. Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay during the disintegration of his marriage to Monroe, investing the film with unmistakable autobiographical anguish. Through colorization, this irreplaceable masterpiece of American cinema is preserved for modern audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Is this really Gable and Monroe’s last film?
A: Yes — Clark Gable died just twelve days after filming ended, and Marilyn Monroe completed no subsequent films before her death in August 1962. This gives the film an almost unbearable poignancy.

Q: Did Arthur Miller write this for Marilyn Monroe?
A: Yes, Miller wrote the screenplay specifically for Monroe during their marriage, and the character of Roslyn carries deeply autobiographical echoes of Monroe herself — her vulnerability, empathy, and radiant wounded beauty.

Q: Is this a Western?
A: It is set in the modern West and features cowboys, but it is really a devastating character study about people who no longer fit in the world — the ‘misfits’ of the title refers to both the unwanted wild horses and the lost humans who pursue them.
