Plot Summary

Norman Truscott is a store worker who dreams of stardom. Vernon Carew is a singer whose star is fading. Vernon manages to get a recording of Norman singing and passes it off as himself. Norman Truscott works in a department store but spends his days dreaming of becoming a famous singer. He practices whenever he can, believing he has genuine talent despite his lack of professional training. Vernon Carew, once a popular singer, sees his career declining as newer acts take the spotlight. Desperate to regain his former glory, Vernon hatches a plan to use Norman’s voice to revive his own career.

When Vernon overhears Norman singing, he realizes that Norman has a natural talent that could help Vernon’s career. Vernon convinces Norman to make a demo recording, promising to help him achieve his dreams of stardom. However, Vernon has no intention of helping Norman succeed – instead, he plans to pass off Norman’s voice as his own, using the young man’s talent to revive his own fading career.

The deception initially succeeds as Vernon’s career is revitalized by the “new” sound of his voice. Norman, meanwhile, remains unaware that his voice is being used to make Vernon famous, believing that Vernon is still working on getting him a break. The film follows the complications that arise from this deception as Vernon must maintain the charade while Norman continues to dream of stardom.

As the deception becomes harder to maintain, the film builds to a climax where the truth must be revealed. Norman eventually discovers that his voice has been stolen, leading to a confrontation that tests both men’s integrity and ambition. The resolution explores themes of authenticity in the entertainment industry and the importance of giving credit where it’s due.

Historical Significance

Released in 1959, Follow a Star represents the golden age of British comedy and Norman Wisdom’s exploration of the entertainment industry. The film’s premise of a talented but naive performer being exploited by a more experienced but less talented figure reflected real concerns about the music industry’s treatment of artists. The 1950s saw significant changes in the music business, with the rise of rock and roll and changing industry practices that sometimes disadvantaged performers.

The film’s exploration of identity and authenticity in entertainment spoke to broader cultural questions about what makes a star and whether talent alone is sufficient for success. Norman’s genuine but unpolished talent versus Vernon’s polished but declining career offered a commentary on the nature of stardom and the industry’s preference for marketability over authenticity.

British comedies of this period often used the entertainment industry as a setting for exploring social themes, and Follow a Star continues this tradition by examining class dynamics and the exploitation of working-class talent. Norman’s position as a store worker dreaming of stardom reflected the aspirations of many working-class Britons who saw entertainment as a path to social mobility. Through modern colorization, this British comedy reaches new audiences who can appreciate Norman Wisdom’s performance, its exploration of the music industry, and its place in the history of British cinema. Now also available en couleur.
