Plot Summary

Harold is an ambitious small-town boy who kisses his sweetheart Mildred goodbye at the train station and heads to the big city with grand promises that he will make his fortune and send for her. In reality, life in the city proves far harder than Harold imagined. He lands a job as a lowly fabric clerk at the De Vore Department Store, earning barely enough to survive while writing elaborate letters home that paint a picture of spectacular success β€” claiming he has been promoted to general manager and lives a life of luxury.

When Mildred arrives unexpectedly to see her wealthy, important fiancΓ© in action, Harold is thrown into a frantic scramble to maintain the charade, borrowing the real manager’s office and barking orders at bewildered employees. Meanwhile, Harold spots a newspaper announcement offering a thousand-dollar bonus to anyone who can generate massive publicity for the store. His old friend Bill Strother, a talented human fly who makes a living climbing the exteriors of buildings, hatches a scheme: Bill will scale the twelve-story department store building while Harold collects the bonus.

But on the day of the stunt, a policeman who bears a grudge against Bill spots him on the ground floor, forcing Harold to start the climb himself, planning to switch with Bill after a single floor. The switch never happens. Floor by agonizing floor, Harold must continue the terrifying ascent up the side of the skyscraper, battling an increasingly absurd series of obstacles β€” aggressive pigeons, a tennis net that tangles around him, a painter’s board that swings him out over the void, a mouse that crawls up his trouser leg, a window that opens onto a barking dog, and finally the giant clock face that has become the single most iconic image in silent cinema. As Harold clings to the clock hands hundreds of feet above the street, with crowds gathered below and Mildred watching in terror, every second becomes a masterclass in comedy and suspense. This classic movie delivers some of the most thrilling and hilarious moments in cinema history.

Historical Significance

Safety Last! contains cinema’s most iconic image: Harold Lloyd dangling from the hands of a large clock high above the city street, an image that has been reproduced, parodied, and referenced countless times in the century since the film’s release. Lloyd performed many of his own climbing stunts despite having lost a thumb and forefinger in a 1919 accident when a prop bomb exploded prematurely. The climbing sequences were filmed using a combination of real buildings and carefully constructed sets built on rooftops, with the actual Los Angeles skyline visible far below β€” creating genuine danger that is palpable on screen. The film was a massive commercial hit, one of the highest-grossing films of 1923, and cemented Lloyd’s position alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton as one of silent cinema’s three great comedians. Through professional colorization, Lloyd’s death-defying genius and comic timing reach a new generation of viewers.
