Plot Summary
In fog-shrouded London, a mysterious killer dubbed ‘Mr. X’ is terrorising the city by murdering policemen — stabbing bobbies on their beats with horrifying impunity while Scotland Yard struggles to find any clue to his identity. The public is in a panic and the Metropolitan Police are under enormous pressure to catch the killer.
Meanwhile, the elegant, supremely self-confident jewel thief Nicholas Dorian Doyle (Robert Montgomery) has pulled off a magnificent gem heist and is enjoying his ill-gotten gains with characteristic insouciance. But when circumstances place him near the scene of one of Mr. X’s murders on the same night as his robbery, Scotland Yard — led by the formidable Sir Herbert Doyle (Lewis Stone) — begins to suspect that the jewel thief and the cop killer are one and the same person.
Nicholas finds himself in a deliciously impossible situation: he cannot prove his innocence of the murders without confessing to the jewel theft, and he cannot remain silent without being arrested for serial murder. His only option is to find Mr. X himself. With characteristic audacity, Nicholas insinuates himself into the police investigation, offering his ‘expertise’ to Scotland Yard while secretly pursuing his own leads. The situation is further complicated when Nicholas falls genuinely in love with Jane Doyle (Elizabeth Allan), Sir Herbert’s beautiful, intelligent daughter — meaning he is simultaneously deceiving, assisting, and courting the family of the man who wants to arrest him. As Nicholas closes in on Mr. X’s true identity, he discovers that the real killer is far closer to home than anyone suspects, and the final confrontation puts both his life and his love at risk.
