Plot Summary

American pearl smuggler and adventurer Matt Gordon returns to the steamy, dangerous streets of Singapore in the aftermath of World War II to recover a fortune in magnificent pearls that he carefully hid in a secret location before the Japanese invasion tore the city apart. The last time Matt was in Singapore, the world was collapsing around him — bombs falling, buildings burning, civilians fleeing in terror — and he was desperately trying to marry the breathtakingly beautiful Linda Doolan before the Japanese army overran the city. They were separated during a catastrophic bombing raid that leveled the hotel where they were to be married, and Matt spent the entire war believing the woman he loved had been killed in the blast.

Upon arriving at his old hotel and beginning his search for the hidden pearls, Matt is stunned beyond comprehension to discover that Linda is not only alive but living in Singapore as the apparently contented wife of a wealthy, aristocratic British rubber planter named Michael Van Leyden. The shock compounds when Matt realizes that Linda has no memory whatsoever of him, their passionate love affair, or their planned wedding — the bombing that separated them left her with complete amnesia, and Van Leyden found her wandering the ruins, nursed her back to health, and married her.

As Matt struggles to recover both his pearls and Linda’s lost memories, playing a dangerous game of trying to be near her without revealing their past to her suspicious, possessive husband, he finds himself entangled in the lethal underworld of postwar Singapore. Smugglers who know about the hidden pearls want them for themselves. Corrupt local officials demand their cut. The city’s criminal element closes in from every direction. Van Leyden himself may know far more about the pearls and about Linda’s past than he pretends. When Linda’s buried memories begin to surface in disturbing, disorienting fragments — a familiar scent, a phrase, a touch that she cannot explain — all three characters are forced to confront painful truths about the past that will determine their futures.

Historical Significance

Singapore features a young Ava Gardner at the very dawn of her legendary stardom, her extraordinary beauty and magnetic screen presence already fully evident alongside the dependable, versatile Fred MacMurray in one of his adventurous leading-man roles. The film captures the authentic atmosphere of postwar Southeast Asia during a fascinating transitional period, where the crumbling remnants of colonial society mixed chaotically with the upheaval of reconstruction, black-market profiteering, and the struggle for independence. Director John Brahm, a German émigré best known for his atmospheric, visually sophisticated thrillers including The Lodger and Hangover Square, gives the film a distinctly noirish sensibility unusual for an exotic adventure romance, with shadows, double-crosses, and moral ambiguity enriching the tropical setting. Through professional colorization, this stylish postwar romance reaches new audiences.
