Plot Summary
George Stroud (Ray Milland) is the brilliant, overworked editor of Crimeways magazine, the flagship publication in the vast media empire controlled by the tyrannical Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton), a megalomaniacal publishing magnate whose obsessive need for control extends from the exact synchronization of every clock in his skyscraper headquarters to the personal lives of every employee who serves him. When Stroud defies Janoth’s demand that he cancel a long-overdue vacation, an evening of rebellious freedom leads him to a Greenwich Village bar where he inadvertently spends several hours in the company of Janoth’s beautiful mistress Pauline York (Rita Johnson), sharing drinks, antique shopping, and innocent conversation that is witnessed by multiple people who can identify her mysterious companion.
That same night, Janoth murders Pauline in a jealous rage after she threatens to expose their affair, and the panicked mogul enlists his sinister right-hand man Steve Hagen (George Macready) to cover up the crime by finding and eliminating the mysterious man last seen with the victim — the only witness who can place Janoth at the scene. In a stroke of diabolical irony, Janoth orders Stroud himself to lead the investigation using Crimeways magazine’s formidable investigative resources, not knowing that his own editor is the very man he is hunting. What follows is one of the most brilliantly constructed suspense narratives in film noir history, as Stroud must simultaneously lead a massive manhunt while ensuring that every clue points away from himself, all under the paranoid surveillance of Janoth and Hagen, who grow increasingly suspicious as the investigation seems to stall. The massive art deco clock that dominates Janoth’s headquarters becomes a relentless symbol of time running out as Stroud races to prove Janoth’s guilt before the net closes around him, and the claustrophobic tension builds to a shattering climax in the clock tower itself.

Ray Milland delivers a performance of extraordinary intelligence and mounting desperation as the trapped editor, his handsome composure gradually cracking under impossible pressure as every investigative lead threatens to expose him. Charles Laughton is magnificently terrifying as Janoth, creating one of film noir’s most memorable villains — a man whose urbane sophistication barely conceals a capacity for murderous violence and paranoid rage. George Macready is chillingly effective as the loyal enforcer whose quiet efficiency makes him perhaps even more dangerous than his volatile employer. Elsa Lanchester provides a wonderful touch of eccentric comedy as a peculiar artist whose testimony becomes a crucial piece of evidence.

Historical Significance
Adapted from Kenneth Fearing’s acclaimed 1946 novel, The Big Clock is one of the most ingeniously plotted film noirs of the late 1940s, its premise of a man forced to investigate himself influencing countless subsequent thrillers. The film was remade in 1987 as No Way Out with Kevin Costner, testimony to the enduring power of its central concept. Charles Laughton’s performance as the monstrous publishing mogul is considered one of the definitive villainous roles in film noir, and the film’s critique of corporate power and media manipulation remains remarkably contemporary. Through colorization, this noir masterpiece is preserved for modern audiences.
