Plot Summary
Gustave Minda, known as Gu, is an aging, hardened gangster who escapes from prison with the help of old associates and goes into hiding in Paris, determined to make one final score before fleeing France for good. Gu is a man of an older criminal generation — he lives by a code of silence and loyalty that the younger, more ruthless gangsters around him no longer respect.
Through his underground contacts, Gu is recruited for a daring heist: the robbery of a platinum shipment on a desolate mountain road. The job is executed with military precision, but its aftermath becomes a nightmare. Inspector Blot, an icily brilliant police detective who has been tracking Gu for years, sees the robbery as his opportunity to finally bring his quarry down — not through straightforward investigation, but through manipulation.
Blot devises a diabolical strategy: he spreads the rumor through the criminal underworld that Gu has informed on his accomplices. In the world Gu inhabits, the accusation of being an informer is a death sentence. Gu’s former allies turn against him. The men who helped him escape now want him dead. Desperate to clear his name and prove that he never broke the code, Gu finds himself fighting on two fronts — against the police who want to cage him and the criminals who want to kill him. This classic movie is a devastating portrait of a man whose rigid sense of honor becomes the instrument of his destruction.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This professionally colorized and restored version brings vivid atmospheric depth to Melville’s austere crime epic. The colorization process reveals the grey Parisian streets, the harsh mountain landscapes of the heist sequence, and the shadowy underworld meeting places in rich, period-accurate detail that enhances Melville’s masterful visual storytelling. Lino Ventura’s craggy, weathered face — one of the most expressive in European cinema — gains extraordinary power in color, every line and shadow conveying decades of hard living and stubborn principle. Paul Meurisse’s elegant Inspector Blot radiates cold intelligence in his impeccably tailored suits and immaculate office. The contrast between the warm tones of loyalty and the cold blues and greys of betrayal creates a visual language that deepens Melville’s exploration of honor and treachery. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Le Deuxième Souffle is one of Jean-Pierre Melville’s greatest achievements and a landmark of French crime cinema. Melville — who had already directed Bob le Flambeur and Le Doulos — reached new heights of narrative ambition and moral complexity with this sprawling, two-and-a-half-hour epic. The film permanently established Lino Ventura, the Italian-born former professional wrestler, as one of the supreme tough-guy actors in world cinema. Ventura’s Gu Minda became an archetype: the aging criminal whose code of honor is simultaneously his greatest strength and his fatal weakness. Paul Meurisse, as the serpentine Inspector Blot, created one of cinema’s most memorable portrayals of police intelligence as a form of psychological warfare. Marcel Bozzuffi, who would later achieve international fame in The French Connection, contributed a riveting supporting performance. The film’s meticulous heist sequence — staged with documentary-like precision on a desolate road — influenced crime filmmaking for decades. Melville’s exploration of the unwritten laws of the criminal world, and the terrible consequences of their violation, would reach its ultimate expression in his later Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge, but many critics consider Le Deuxième Souffle his most emotionally powerful work.
