Plot Summary

A small American town, 1917. Jack Powell (Charles “Buddy” Rogers) and David Armstrong (Richard Arlen) are young men from very different backgrounds who share one thing: they are both in love with the beautiful Sylvia Lewis (Jobyna Ralston). Jack, cheerful and middle-class, is oblivious to the fact that Sylvia actually loves David, the wealthy and reserved son of the town’s leading family. Meanwhile, Mary Preston (Clara Bow), Jack’s tomboyish next-door neighbour, adores Jack with all her heart — but he sees her only as a pal, completely blind to her devotion.

When America enters the Great War, both Jack and David enlist in the Army Air Service. Their rivalry over Sylvia makes their initial training contentious, but the shared dangers and camaraderie of military life gradually forge a deep bond between them. They are assigned to the same squadron on the Western Front, where the reality of aerial combat — the terror, the exhilaration, and the constant presence of death — cements their friendship into something inseparable.

The aerial sequences are staggering in their scale and realism. Director William Wellman, himself a combat pilot during the war, staged the dogfight sequences with real aircraft and real stunt pilots, creating images of aerial warfare that retain their power to astonish nearly a century later. Planes loop and dive, tracers streak across the sky, and aircraft spiral earthward in flames — all photographed with a clarity and immediacy that modern CGI has never matched.

Mary, determined to be near Jack, enlists as an ambulance driver and serves in France. The emotional climax comes during the great Battle of Saint-Mihiel, when David’s plane is shot down behind enemy lines. Believing David is dead, Jack flies a suicidal mission of vengeance — but David has survived, escaped, and stolen a German aircraft to fly back to his own lines. In a devastating twist of fate, Jack does not recognise the German plane. The consequences are shattering, and give the film’s final act an emotional weight that transcends the spectacle.

Historical Significance

Wings holds an unassailable place in cinema history as the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture (then called Outstanding Picture) at the inaugural ceremony in 1929. It is the only purely silent film ever to win the award. Director William Wellman drew on his own experience as a World War I combat pilot to create aerial sequences of unprecedented realism that set the standard for every aviation film that followed. The film’s production was one of the most ambitious of the silent era, employing the cooperation of the United States War Department, which provided thousands of soldiers, hundreds of aircraft, and access to military bases. The film’s frank and poignant depiction of the bond between the two male leads was remarkably progressive for its time. Through colorization, this towering achievement in cinema has been preserved for modern audiences in a spectacular new visual presentation.
