Plot Summary

A desperate unwed mother (Edna Purviance), an artist’s model recently abandoned by the child’s father, wraps her newborn in a blanket and places him in the back seat of a wealthy family’s limousine, hoping the baby will be raised in luxury and comfort. Through a cruel twist of fate, car thieves steal the automobile and, discovering the infant, abandon him in an alley beside dustbins in one of the city’s poorest neighbourhoods.

The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin), shuffling through the alley on his morning rounds, discovers the tiny foundling. Despite his own dire poverty and initial bewildered reluctance — he tries three times to leave the baby somewhere, only to find it returned to him each time — the Tramp takes the child home to his one-room garret and raises him as his own son.

Five years later, the Kid (Jackie Coogan) has grown into a bright, mischievous, street-smart boy who works in perfect comic partnership with his adoptive father. Their ingenious con operates like clockwork: the Kid roams ahead through the neighbourhood throwing stones through windows, and the Tramp arrives moments later with his glazier’s kit, innocently offering his professional services to the outraged homeowners. Their scam is small-time and harmless, but their bond is unshakeable and profoundly genuine.

When the authorities discover that the Tramp is not the child’s biological parent, they dispatch the county orphanage agents to seize the boy. In a heart-wrenching sequence that remains one of cinema’s most powerful moments, the Tramp chases the orphanage truck across rooftops in a desperate, anguished bid to reclaim his son. Meanwhile, the boy’s biological mother — now a famous and wealthy opera singer consumed by guilt — has launched a frantic search for the child she abandoned years ago. The collision of these two worlds tests the meaning of parenthood, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be a family.

Cast & Crew

Director: Charlie Chaplin
Stars: Charlie Chaplin delivers one of his most emotionally complex and deeply human performances as the Tramp, balancing inspired physical comedy with heartbreaking tenderness in a role that draws on his own impoverished childhood. Jackie Coogan, just six years old, became cinema’s first child star with his remarkably natural, emotionally devastating performance as the Kid. Edna Purviance brings quiet dignity and genuine anguish as the mother, while Carl Miller appears as the absent father.
