Plot Summary

Bijou Blanche is a sultry, world-weary cabaret singer who drifts from port to port across the tropical South Pacific, leaving a trail of broken hearts, jealous rivals, and spectacular bar brawls in her wake. After being deported from yet another island — the latest in a long string of expulsions caused by the disturbances her irresistible charm provokes — she washes up at a remote Navy base where American officers and sailors maintain order amid the exotic temptations of the tropics.

She immediately catches the eye of Lieutenant Dan Brent, an idealistic and promising young naval officer with a spotless record and a bright career ahead of him. Despite stern warnings from his superiors, who recognize the dangerous pattern of destruction that follows Bijou everywhere, Dan falls hard for the alluring chanteuse. Their romance blossoms amid exotic nightclub performances where Bijou’s smoky voice captivates every man in the room, moonlit walks along tropical beaches, and the warm, humid evenings of island life. But hovering around them is a colorful rogues’ gallery of misfits, drunks, and con artists who form Bijou’s fiercely loyal entourage — including Little Ned the pickpocket, the philosophical drunk Dr. Martin, and the hulking brute “Sasha” — each of whom adds to the chaos.

Bijou knows, with the hard-won wisdom of a woman who has loved and lost many times, that her wild reputation and the inevitable trouble she attracts will eventually destroy Dan’s naval career, his good name, and any future he might have. As a rival suitor grows increasingly violent and Dan’s commanding officers prepare disciplinary action, Bijou faces the wrenching choice between holding on to the man she truly loves or sacrificing her own happiness to set him free. The climactic barroom brawl — one of the most spectacular and elaborately choreographed fight scenes in all of classic Hollywood — brings every character together in an unforgettable explosion of shattering glass, flying furniture, and pure comedic mayhem.
