Experience the magnificent The Scarlet Claw (1944) in stunning colorized HD. Directed by Roy William Neill, widely regarded as the finest entry in the Basil Rathbone–Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes series, this atmospheric thriller finds Holmes and Watson in the remote Canadian village of La Mort Rouge, where a series of brutal murders has terrified the local population into believing that a legendary supernatural monster — a phantom that glows in the marsh mists and strikes with inhuman savagery — is stalking the village. When Lady Penrose, who had written to Holmes begging for help, is found murdered with her throat torn as if by the claws of a wild beast, Holmes refuses to accept the supernatural explanation and begins an investigation that leads him through the fog-shrouded marshlands to a human killer whose methods are as ingenious as they are terrifying. Plot Summary
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are attending a conference in Quebec City when they learn of strange events in the remote village of La Mort Rouge — literally “the Red Death.” The villagers live in terror of a legend: a glowing phantom that prowls the marshes surrounding the village, a creature that kills with savage claws and leaves its victims with their throats torn open. When Lady Penrose is murdered in exactly this fashion, and her husband Lord Penrose (Paul Cavanagh) reveals that she had recently written to Holmes requesting his help, the great detective travels to the village to investigate.
La Mort Rouge is a place seemingly designed for Gothic horror — a tiny settlement surrounded by vast, fog-choked marshlands where visibility drops to nothing, where strange lights flicker in the mist, and where every villager has a theory, a superstition, or a secret. The local judge, Lord Penrose, and the village postmaster Potts (Arthur Hohl) are among those with connections to the case. The church bell rings mysteriously at midnight — the same bell that legend says tolls when the phantom claims a victim.
Holmes examines the murder scene and immediately recognises that no supernatural agency is involved — the wounds are deliberate and precise, the work of a calculating human intelligence operating behind a carefully maintained facade of superstition. But the killer is extraordinarily clever. As Holmes investigates, additional victims fall. The murderer seems capable of being in two places at once, of changing appearance with supernatural fluidity, and of anticipating Holmes’s own deductions with disturbing accuracy.
The investigation drives Holmes deeper into the marshes and deeper into the village’s interconnected secrets. The solution, when it emerges, reveals a scheme of almost literary complexity — a killer whose methods of disguise are so perfect that even Holmes must revise his theories repeatedly before identifying the true face behind the phantom’s mask.
Cast & Crew
Director: Roy William Neill
Stars: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Gerald Hamer, Paul Cavanagh, Arthur Hohl, Miles Mander, Kay Harding, David Clyde

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The fog-shrouded Canadian marshlands — the thick white mist that swallows trees and houses, the dark green of the surrounding forests, the warm glow of cottage windows against the cold night, the eerie phosphorescent light of the “phantom” moving through the fog — are spectacularly enhanced through expert colorization. This is the most atmospherically Gothic film in the Holmes series, and seeing the interplay of light, shadow, fog, and colour transforms it from merely excellent to genuinely haunting. The Canadian village setting, with its distinctive architecture and landscape, is beautifully rendered in full colour. Now also available in colour. Own the finest Rathbone Holmes film for just €15.00 — where the greatest detective faces his most cunning adversary.
Historical Significance
The Scarlet Claw is consistently ranked by critics and fans as the best of the fourteen Rathbone-Bruce Universal Holmes films — and by some as the finest Sherlock Holmes film ever made. It draws on the atmosphere of The Hound of the Baskervilles (the fog-bound setting, the supernatural legend, the rational explanation) while creating an original mystery that many consider superior to its Famous source. The film’s villain — whose method of disguise is revealed through one of cinema’s most chilling sequences — has been cited as an influence on later mystery and thriller filmmakers. Director Roy William Neill achieves a perfect balance of Gothic atmosphere and detective plotting. Despite being set in Canada, the film captures something universal about rural communities, isolation, and the terrors that lurk in fog and legend. Through colorization, this masterpiece of mystery cinema has been preserved for modern audiences.
