Plot Summary
The American frontier, the 1870s. Wild Bill Hickok (Bruce Cabot) has hung up his guns and settled into a quieter life, tired of the violence and danger that have defined his years as a lawman and gunfighter. But his retirement is interrupted when an old friend sends an urgent appeal for help from a frontier settlement where honest farmers and their families are being driven off their land.
The villain is a wealthy and powerful cattleman who has assembled a private army of gunmen and hired thugs to intimidate, threaten, and if necessary murder anyone who stands in the way of his land-grabbing scheme. The settlers have no one to turn to β the local law enforcement is either corrupt or too frightened to act, and the nearest federal authority is weeks of hard riding away.
Hickok arrives in town and quickly assesses the situation. The cattleman operates behind a facade of respectability, using legitimate business fronts to conceal his criminal activities. His agents have forged land deeds, bribed officials, and terrorised witnesses into silence. Several homesteaders have already been killed in staged accidents or ambushes, and the surviving settlers are on the verge of abandoning their claims.
Complicating matters is the presence of a beautiful and spirited woman (Constance Bennett) who is caught in the middle of the conflict. As Hickok methodically exposes the conspiracy and dismantles the cattleman’s operation piece by piece, the violence escalates. The cattleman’s gunmen target Hickok directly, leading to a series of tense confrontations and spectacular gunfights. Hickok must use both his famous marksmanship and his frontier cunning to outmaneuver a well-organised and heavily armed enemy that outnumbers him many times over, building toward a climactic showdown that will determine the fate of the entire settlement.
