Plot Summary

Jack Burns (Kirk Douglas) is the last of a vanishing breed — a fiercely independent cowboy who lives by his own rules, sleeping under the stars with his faithful horse Whiskey and answering to no one. When he learns that his old friend Paul Bondi (Michael Kane) has been imprisoned for helping illegal immigrants cross the border, Jack rides into the city of Duke City, New Mexico, determined to break him out.

Jack deliberately gets himself arrested by starting a bar fight, landing in the same jail as Paul. But Paul, who has a wife and child, refuses to escape — he’d rather serve his sentence than live as a fugitive. Undeterred, Jack breaks out alone, cutting through the jail’s fence with the help of a hidden tool, and flees into the rugged Sandia Mountains on horseback.

What follows is one of cinema’s great chase sequences. Sheriff Morey Johnson (Walter Matthau), a thoughtful, sympathetic lawman who privately admires Jack’s spirit, reluctantly leads the pursuit. The modern world’s arsenal is deployed against one man and his horse — jeeps, two-way radios, a helicopter, and the sadistic deputy Gutierrez (George Kennedy), who takes personal pleasure in the hunt.

Jack and Whiskey climb higher into the mountains, navigating treacherous terrain, evading the helicopter, and outwitting the posse. But the modern world is relentless, and Jack knows that every fence he cuts, every highway he crosses, brings him closer to a confrontation he cannot win. In the devastating climax, as Jack attempts to cross a rain-slicked highway at night to reach the freedom of open country beyond, a massive truck — driven by an unwitting trucker (Carroll O’Connor) hauling a load of toilets, the ultimate symbol of domesticated civilization — bears down on him.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of Lonely Are the Brave magnificently enhances its stunning visual storytelling — the vast New Mexico skies, the golden desert landscapes, the green pine forests of the Sandia Mountains, and the cold blue of the rain-soaked highway all benefit enormously from the addition of colour. This is a film about the beauty of the wild world vanishing beneath asphalt and fences, and colorization transforms the original black and white photography, making that contrast between natural beauty and industrial modernity visually devastating. The era-accurate frame-by-frame colorization process uses advanced digital techniques to bring the film’s magnificent landscapes to life. Buy Lonely Are the Brave (1962) Colorized today for €15.00 and own Kirk Douglas’s finest film in a DRM-free format.

Historical Significance

Lonely Are the Brave holds a unique place in American cinema as both a farewell to the classical western and a prophetic statement about individual freedom in the modern age. The film was adapted by Dalton Trumbo, who had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era and imprisoned for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee — making him the perfect writer for a story about a man who refuses to submit to authority. The film earned a BAFTA nomination and holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Edward Abbey’s source novel, “The Brave Cowboy,” became a touchstone of American environmental and libertarian thought. The restored colorized version preserves this masterpiece about the price of freedom in a world that has no room for mavericks.
