Plot Summary

Nick Coster (Humphrey Bogart) runs his travelling carnival with an iron fist, controlling every aspect of the operation from the booking of acts to the management of his performers. His world revolves around two things: the success of his show and the protection of his younger sister Mary (Joan Leslie), whom he guards with a fierce possessiveness that borders on obsessive. Nick has built a careful existence in which nothing threatens his authority or the people he considers under his dominion.

When the carnival’s lion escapes during a performance, a young grocery clerk named Matt Varney (Eddie Albert) bravely intervenes and helps recapture the dangerous animal. Impressed by the young man’s courage and natural affinity with the big cats, Nick sees an opportunity and recruits Matt as the show’s new lion tamer. Matt proves to be a natural performer, quickly becoming the star attraction of the carnival and winning audiences with his fearless act inside the cage with the temperamental lions.

However, complications arise swiftly when Matt and Mary fall in love. Nick, who cannot tolerate any man coming near his sister, reacts with escalating hostility and jealousy. His attempts to separate the young couple become increasingly desperate and dangerous, threatening to destroy the carnival and the people he claims to protect. Meanwhile, the former lion tamer Hoffman warns Matt about the mortal dangers of the big cat act and the unpredictable nature of the animals. As Nick’s jealous rage spirals out of control, the story hurtles toward a dramatic and violent climax inside the lion cage itself, where the consequences of obsession and recklessness converge in a confrontation between man and beast that will determine the fates of everyone involved.

Historical Significance

The Wagons Roll at Night is a remake of the 1937 Edward G. Robinson film Kid Galahad, transplanting the boxing story to a carnival setting. The film captures Bogart during the pivotal period just before his breakthrough role in The Maltese Falcon (1941), demonstrating the commanding screen presence that would make him one of Hollywood’s greatest stars. The carnival setting provides a fascinating glimpse into Depression-era travelling entertainment that was rapidly disappearing from American life. Through colorization, this exciting and atmospheric Warner Bros. melodrama has been preserved for modern audiences who appreciate Hollywood’s golden age of studio filmmaking and Bogart’s formidable early dramatic talent.
