Plot Summary
Jan Van Rooyer (Hardy Kruger), a talented young Dutch painter living in London, arrives for a romantic assignation at the fashionable apartment of Jacqueline Doussard (Micheline Presle), a beautiful and wealthy older French woman who has been his lover. He discovers her dead — murdered — and the police, led by the methodical and ruthless Inspector Morgan (Stanley Baker), immediately focus their investigation on the obvious suspect: the young foreign artist found at the scene of the crime.
Morgan interrogates Jan with relentless intensity, building a circumstantial case that seems increasingly airtight. Jan had motive — jealousy over Jacqueline’s other relationships. He had opportunity — he was in the apartment. And his fingerprints are everywhere. The harder Jan protests his innocence, the more guilty he appears, and Morgan’s techniques of interrogation are designed to break resistance and extract confessions.
But as Morgan’s investigation deepens, he discovers that Jacqueline’s life was far more complicated than it appeared. She moved in elevated social circles, her connections reached into the highest levels of British society, and powerful people have very good reasons to want this case closed quickly with a convenient suspect. Morgan begins to realize that solving the murder honestly may mean challenging people whose influence extends far beyond his authority.
The film becomes a sophisticated exploration of class, power, and the way the legal system can be manipulated to protect the privileged. Morgan faces a choice between the easy solution — convicting the vulnerable foreigner — and the truth, which leads to places he may not be allowed to go. Losey builds tension through psychological complexity rather than action, creating a thriller that rewards attention and challenges assumptions.
