Plot Summary

Sam Dodsworth has spent his entire adult life building the Dodsworth Motor Company into one of America’s most successful automobile manufacturers. Now, at the peak of his career, he has sold his company and retired, ready to enjoy the fruits of his decades of labour. His wife Fran has long dreamed of travelling to Europe, and Sam, eager to please her and excited about their new freedom, books passage on a luxury liner bound for England.

But from the moment the ship leaves harbour, the cracks in their marriage begin to widen into chasms. Fran, terrified of aging and desperate to recapture the glamour of her youth, reinvents herself as a sophisticated European-style woman of the world. She flirts shamelessly with younger men, adopts affected Continental manners, and increasingly regards her solid, decent, thoroughly American husband as an embarrassing reminder of the provincial life she is determined to leave behind.

Sam watches in bewildered pain as the woman he has loved and provided for throughout their marriage transforms into a shallow, pretentious stranger who is ashamed of him. His attempts to share in her enthusiasm for European culture are met with condescension and contempt. She is drawn into a series of romantic entanglements with European men who flatter her vanity but have no genuine interest in her beyond her wealth and availability.

As Fran’s behaviour becomes increasingly reckless and humiliating, Sam finds unexpected solace in the company of Edith Cortright, a divorced American woman living quietly in Italy. Edith is everything Fran is not — warm, genuine, intelligent, and capable of appreciating Sam for the decent, thoughtful man he truly is. Through Edith, Sam begins to discover the person he might become if he can find the courage to stop enabling Fran’s selfishness and start living authentically for the first time in his life. The resolution is one of the most emotionally powerful and honest endings in classical cinema.
