Plot Summary
In the small American town of Morgan’s Creek during World War II, the exuberant Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hutton) sneaks away from her stern father — the local constable, Poppa Kockenlocker (William Demarest) — to attend a wild farewell party for soldiers shipping out overseas. The devoted but extremely nervous Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), who has been hopelessly in love with Trudy since childhood, drives her to the party and waits loyally outside all night.
Trudy returns in the early hours in a fog of confusion: she got wildly drunk, danced the night away, and apparently married one of the soldiers in a hasty roadside ceremony — but she can barely remember his name. Was it Ratzkiwatzki? Ignatz? She isn’t sure. The soldier has shipped out and left no forwarding address. And then, to make matters infinitely worse, Trudy discovers she is pregnant.
The situation is catastrophic by 1940s small-town standards, and Sturges mines every ounce of comedy from the increasingly desperate attempts to fix it. Trudy convinces the hapless Norval to marry her so the baby will have a legitimate father, but their attempts to obtain a marriage license set off a cascade of legal disasters. Norval is arrested for impersonating a soldier, charged with fraud, and jailed. Poppa Kockenlocker threatens to murder everyone involved. Trudy’s cynical fourteen-year-old sister Emmy (Diana Lynn) provides a running commentary of devastatingly dry wit. The entire town becomes enmeshed in the scandal, and everything spirals toward complete catastrophe — until a genuinely miraculous conclusion delivers an ending so outrageous that it left wartime censors sputtering with helpless fury.
Cast & Crew
Director: Preston Sturges
Stars: Betty Hutton is a force of nature as Trudy — brassy, vulnerable, hilarious, and unstoppable, bringing explosive energy and genuine sweetness to a character who could easily have been unsympathetic. Eddie Bracken is magnificently pathetic as the stammering, lovesick Norval, and William Demarest is a volcanic marvel of apoplectic rage as Poppa. Diana Lynn steals every scene she appears in as the precociously cynical little sister Emmy.

Historical Significance
Released in 1944, The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek is considered one of the most subversive films ever produced by a Hollywood studio. Preston Sturges somehow smuggled past the wartime censors a comedy about premarital sex, drunkenness, unwed pregnancy, and bigamy — subjects that were absolutely forbidden — by wrapping them in such brilliant comic chaos that the censors couldn’t figure out how to object. James Agee called it ‘like taking a running broad jump and landing in a cloud bank.’ Through colorization, this essential comedy masterpiece is preserved for modern audiences.
