Plot Summary

Larry Haines (Bob Hope) is a second-rate vaudeville comedian whose entire act depends on his trained penguin Percy β€” and even Percy gets more laughs. While waiting backstage at a crowded train station, the beautiful and mysterious British agent Karen Bentley (Madeleine Carroll) suddenly latches onto Larry, pretending to be his girlfriend to evade the Nazi agents on her tail. Before Larry can process what is happening, he is plunged headlong into a deadly cross-country chase. Karen is transporting vital secret documents β€” encoded information about Allied shipping lanes β€” that must reach the authorities in Los Angeles, and a ruthless ring of Nazi spies led by the coldly menacing Dr. Hugo Streger (Gale Sondergaard) and the sinister Karl (George Zucco) will stop at nothing to intercept them.

The mismatched pair must traverse the country by train, bus, car, and sheer desperation, with the enemy agents always one step behind. Larry’s natural cowardice provides endless comedy as he tries repeatedly to escape, only to be dragged back into danger by Karen’s combination of patriotic appeals and devastating good looks. From narrow escapes in sleeping car berths to a wild chase through a fuel depot, from close calls in small-town diners to a climactic confrontation at an airfield, the bumbling Larry repeatedly stumbles into peril and somehow blunders his way back out, while falling hopelessly in love with the gorgeous spy who is clearly miles out of his league. Karen, for her part, is steely and resourceful, but even she cannot predict what Larry’s inspired panic will produce next. This classic movie is one of Bob Hope’s finest comedies, perfectly blending rapid-fire laughs with genuine wartime espionage thrills.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of My Favorite Blonde reveals the glamorous costumes, the varied American landscapes, and the comedic action set pieces with delightful new visual energy. The original black and white film captured Hope’s comic timing and Carroll’s beauty perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out Madeleine Carroll’s elegant wardrobe and platinum blonde hair that gives the film its title, the rich burgundy and brass interiors of the Pullman train cars, the small-town American streets and country roads of the cross-country chase, the period wartime details of uniformed soldiers and propaganda posters, and Percy the penguin’s sleek black-and-white plumage against colorful stage backdrops with frame-by-frame precision. The contrast between the glamorous spy thriller world and Larry’s low-rent vaudeville existence is wonderfully enhanced by the colorization. Watch this restored classic film in bright, vibrant color. Historical Significance

My Favorite Blonde was one of the biggest box office hits of 1942 and cemented Bob Hope’s status as one of America’s most popular comedians during the war years. The film paired him with the stunning Madeleine Carroll, who had previously starred in two Alfred Hitchcock thrillers β€” The 39 Steps and Secret Agent β€” bringing genuine spy-film credibility to the comedy. The Hitchcock-influenced plot of an innocent man drawn into espionage while on the run with a beautiful woman was a deliberate homage, and the film features a famous uncredited cameo by Bing Crosby that became one of the most talked-about gag appearances in 1940s cinema. Hope’s trademark style β€” the cowardly wisecracks, the fourth-wall-breaking asides to the audience, the contrast between bravado and panic β€” was never sharper. The film launched Hope’s “My Favorite” series, followed by My Favorite Brunette and My Favorite Spy. The colorization adds sparkling visual fun to this wartime comedy classic.
