Plot Summary
When elderly recluse Mr. Enderby dies of an apparent heart attack after being frightened by a cat at his gloomy and neglected estate, Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford) is not convinced by the official verdict. She notices scratches on the dead man’s arm that don’t match a cat’s claws and suggest something far more sinister — that someone deliberately terrified the frail old man to death and staged the scene to look like a natural demise. But Inspector Craddock (Charles Tingwell) and the police dismiss her suspicions as the fanciful theories of a meddling old woman.
Determined to find the truth, Miss Marple follows the trail of the substantial Enderby inheritance to the Dobyns Dobyns Dobyns, a picturesque riding school and country hotel run by the flamboyant, larger-than-life Hector Dobyns (Robert Morley), who collects antiques with the same enthusiasm he brings to horse training. The dead man’s greedy relatives have all gathered at the hotel, each with a potential motive and a claim on the considerable fortune — including the severe Miss Gilchrist (Flora Robson), the shifty nephew, and several other suspicious family members. Posing as a paying guest at the hotel, Miss Marple immerses herself in the horsey world of the establishment, gamely taking riding lessons despite her complete lack of equestrian experience and dancing a joyously spirited twist with the charming Hector at an evening social. When a second murder occurs — this time unmistakably deliberate — the danger becomes very real, and Miss Marple must use all her formidable detective skills and knowledge of human nature to unmask the killer before the inheritance and its deadly secrets claim another victim. This classic movie combines cozy mystery charm with Margaret Rutherford’s irresistible comedic energy.

Historical Significance
Murder at the Gallop was the second of four Miss Marple films starring Margaret Rutherford, adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel After the Funeral, with Miss Marple replacing Christie’s Belgian detective Hercule Poirot as the investigating character. This substitution was controversial among Christie purists but delighted general audiences, who adored Rutherford’s energetic, physically adventurous interpretation of the genteel spinster detective. Robert Morley’s performance as the charming Hector earned particular praise, and the chemistry between Morley and Rutherford — especially in the famous twist dance sequence — became one of the film’s most beloved and frequently quoted moments. Produced by MGM’s British division, the film was a solid commercial success that confirmed the viability of the Rutherford Miss Marple series. The colorization brings new visual warmth to this beloved entry in the British mystery tradition.
