Plot Summary

Helen Keller has been deaf and blind since a devastating illness in infancy, and by the age of six she has become an uncontrollable child who communicates only through primitive gestures and violent tantrums. Her loving but overwhelmed parents, Captain and Kate Keller, have tried everything they can think of but have been unable to reach their daughter, and the family lives in a state of constant chaos as Helen destroys things, steals food from others’ plates, and terrorises the household.

Annie Sullivan arrives at the Keller home in Alabama as Helen’s new teacher. Annie is herself partially blind and carries deep emotional scars from her own terrible childhood, including the death of her beloved brother in an institution for the poor. But she possesses an iron will and an absolute conviction that Helen is an intelligent child who can learn to communicate if someone is willing to fight hard enough to reach her.

The battle between Annie and Helen forms the dramatic core of the film. Annie insists on discipline and structure, spelling words into Helen’s hand using the manual alphabet, while Helen resists with all the ferocity of a trapped animal. The Kellers, unable to bear seeing their daughter struggle, constantly undermine Annie’s efforts, and Annie must fight them almost as hard as she fights Helen’s resistance.

Annie convinces the Kellers to let her take Helen to a small garden house where they can work together without interference. In this isolated environment, Annie slowly begins to establish the foundations of communication, teaching Helen to associate the finger-spelled words with objects. But Helen learns the physical motions without understanding that they represent language — until the climactic scene at the water pump, where the feel of water flowing over her hand suddenly connects with the word Annie is spelling, and Helen’s mind explodes into understanding.
