Plot Summary

Aboard the magnificent Mississippi showboat Cotton Blossom, the lives of entertainers, gamblers, and river folk intertwine across sweeping decades of American history, from the 1880s through the Jazz Age and into the early 1930s. The story begins when young, sheltered, and hopelessly romantic Magnolia Hawks, the innocent daughter of the Cotton Blossom’s gruff but loving captain, Andy Hawks, falls deeply in love with the dashing, charming gambler Gaylord Ravenal, who arrives aboard the showboat with nothing but a handsome face, a silk cravat, and an irresistible way with cards and women. Despite her mother Parthy’s fierce, unrelenting opposition to the match, Magnolia’s heart cannot be deterred.

Their romance unfolds against the far more tragic story of Julie LaVerne, the Cotton Blossom’s beloved leading lady and star singer, whose magnificent voice and magnetic stage presence conceal a dangerous secret. Julie is of mixed race in the segregated American South, and when a jealous rival exposes her heritage to the local sheriff under the brutal anti-miscegenation laws of the era, she is forced to leave the showboat in disgrace along with her devoted white husband Steve, who has cut her hand and swallowed her blood to truthfully swear that he has her blood in his veins. Julie’s devastating departure opens the leading lady role for Magnolia, launching her performing career.

After Magnolia and Gaylord marry and move to Chicago to begin their new life together, their fairy-tale romance slowly, painfully crumbles as his compulsive gambling drains their savings, his pride prevents him from seeking honest work, and mounting losses turn the charming rogue into a desperate, haunted man. When he finally abandons Magnolia and their young daughter Kim on New Year’s Eve, she is left alone, penniless, and terrified in a cold city. Returning to the stage out of sheer necessity, Magnolia discovers she has inherited Julie’s gift for pouring heartbreak into song, and builds a successful career as a singer and actress over the following decades. Through births and deaths, racism and reconciliation, fortune and ruin, the Cotton Blossom sails on down the mighty Mississippi as a floating metaphor for the American experience itself.
