Plot Summary

New Orleans — the real New Orleans, not the tourist postcard version. A city of crumbling shotgun houses, smoky dive bars, industrial canals, and streets where the beautiful and the broken exist side by side in a permanent state of humid decay.

Zack is a disc jockey at a small radio station — a cool, laconic hipster in a porkpie hat who talks in jazz rhythms and is slowly losing everything. His girlfriend throws him out, his career is going nowhere, and when a ‘friend’ offers him easy money to drive a car across town, Zack takes the job without asking questions. The car contains a body. Zack is arrested for murder.

Jack is a small-time pimp — a stylish, sardonic man who thinks he’s smarter than everyone around him. When a rival sets him up by sending an underage girl to his hotel room just as the police arrive, Jack finds himself arrested and facing serious charges.

Both men end up in the same cell in Orleans Parish Prison, where they establish a hostile, suspicious coexistence — two cool characters who refuse to show vulnerability.

Then Roberto arrives. Roberto is an Italian tourist who speaks fractured, enthusiastic English assembled from a small notebook of useful phrases.
