Plot Summary

Ben Harper is executed for killing two men during a bank robbery in which he stole $10,000. Before his arrest, he hid the money inside his young daughter Pearl’s ragdoll and made his children — John (Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce) — swear never to tell anyone where the money is. In prison, Ben shared a cell with Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), a self-proclaimed preacher who murders widows and claims God has commanded him to do so.
