Plot Summary
Blood on the Sun (1945) is set in 1929 Tokyo, where American newspaper editor Nick Condon (James Cagney) is investigating the political situation in a Japan that is secretly planning its strategy for global conquest. When Nick’s colleague uncovers the Tanaka Memorial — a classified military document outlining Japan’s plans for war — and is murdered for it, Nick takes it upon himself to recover the document and get it out of the country before ruthless Japanese agents can destroy the evidence.
Nick is joined in his dangerous mission by Iris Hilliard (Sylvia Sidney), a mysterious and resourceful woman whose motives are not entirely clear. Together they navigate the dangers of a police state while relentless agents close in around them. The film builds through a series of beautifully choreographed action sequences — judo fights, car chases, clandestine meetings — that showcase both Cagney’s physical dexterity and director Frank Lloyd‘s assured command of thriller pacing.
Blood on the Sun was released in 1945, while the Second World War was still raging, and its paranoid atmosphere and depictions of authoritarian repression reflected the anxieties of its time with remarkable directness. The film won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and was nominated for Best Actor (Cagney) and Best Dramatic Score, recognizing the craft that went into every aspect of its production.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Blood on the Sun (1945) won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction in black and white cinematography, and the visual design of the film — the sweeping Tokyo interiors, the authentic period detail of late-1920s Japan, the careful construction of every frame — is one of its greatest strengths. In this professionally restored and colorized edition, the award-winning design is presented with a new richness of color that makes visible what the shadows of the original black and white photography could only suggest.
The colorization process uses advanced digital techniques to ensure historically accurate colors while preserving every detail of the original cinematography.
James Cagney is one of the most physically dynamic actors in Hollywood history, and in color his screen presence takes on an additional intensity. The judo sequences — among the finest-choreographed action in 1940s American cinema — gain immediacy and clarity in the colorized version, with the spatial relationships and athletic movement rendered in sharp, fully realized color that makes the fights feel immediate and real.
The film’s period Tokyo settings, painstakingly reconstructed by the art direction team that won the Academy Award, are brought fully to life in color: the warm wood interiors of period hotels and government offices, the deep navy and grey of Japanese military uniforms, the vibrant street color of late-1920s Tokyo. Every frame of this colorized classic film is both a compelling thriller and a visual showcase for the craft that went into the original production.
For admirers of James Cagney, for lovers of WWII cinema, or for anyone who appreciates the craft that won Blood on the Sun its Academy Award, this professionally restored and colorized frame-by-frame edition is an essential buy at €15.00. This classic movie is also available in colour for international audiences.
