The Song of Bernadette (1943) — Buy This Classic in Color

Experience the luminous, deeply moving religious drama The Song of Bernadette (1943) colorized in stunning HD quality. Directed by Henry King, this Twentieth Century-Fox production stars Jennifer Jones — in her Academy Award-winning debut — as Bernadette Soubirous, the simple, uneducated fourteen-year-old French peasant girl whose vision of a beautiful lady in the grotto at Massabielle in 1858 Lourdes transformed a backwater town into one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world and ultimately led to her canonisation as a saint. Based on Franz Werfel’s bestselling novel, the film follows Bernadette from her initial vision through the disbelief, persecution, medical examination, and ecclesiastical investigation that tested her faith, to her entry into a convent where her suffering and devotion continued until her early death. Now available as an instant, DRM-free digital download for only €15.00.

Plot Summary

Lourdes, France, 1858. Bernadette Soubirous (Jennifer Jones) is the sickly, impoverished daughter of a former miller whose family lives in a single room of a converted prison. She is not clever, not pious in any exceptional way, and not remarkable by any standard the world would recognise. She is simply a gentle, honest, asthmatic girl who cannot memorise her catechism.

On February 11, 1858, while gathering firewood at the grotto of Massabielle, Bernadette sees a beautiful lady dressed in white standing in a niche in the rock. The lady appears to Bernadette eighteen times over the following weeks, and during one apparition directs her to dig in the ground, revealing a spring whose waters will become the site of miraculous healings. The lady eventually identifies herself to Bernadette as ‘the Immaculate Conception.’

The visions ignite a firestorm. The civil authorities — the imperial prosecutor Dutour (Vincent Price), the police commissioner Jacomet (Gladys Cooper in a fierce performance) — are convinced Bernadette is either lying or mentally ill and attempt to intimidate her into recanting. The Church authorities are cautious and sceptical. The medical establishment is hostile. The townspeople are divided between fervent belief and cynical suspicion. Through all of this, Bernadette’s unshakeable, quiet insistence on what she has seen — without elaboration, without self-importance, without any claim to special status — becomes the most powerful testimony of all. Her subsequent entry into the Convent of Nevers and the suffering she endures there before her early death complete the portrait of a soul whose simplicity and honesty transcended every worldly force arrayed against it.

Historical Significance

Released in 1943, The Song of Bernadette was one of the most critically and commercially successful films of the decade. It won four Academy Awards including Best Actress for Jennifer Jones and was nominated for twelve — the most of any film that year. Franz Werfel’s novel, written while the Jewish author was fleeing the Nazis through France, was a worldwide bestseller. The film’s opening title card — ‘For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible’ — has become one of the most quoted lines in cinema. Through colorization, this Oscar-winning masterpiece is preserved for modern audiences.
