Plot Summary
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are private detectives dispatched to Mexico City on what should be a routine case — tracking down a female criminal named Larceny Nell, a dangerous con woman who has sworn revenge against Stan for his testimony that sent her to prison. But their troubles begin the moment they arrive, because Stan happens to be an exact double of Don Sebastian, Mexico’s most celebrated matador, and the mistaken identity plunges both partners into an escalating cascade of absurd, increasingly dangerous situations.
When word spreads that “Don Sebastian” has arrived in the city, the entire population erupts with excitement, and Stan finds himself trapped in a nightmare of celebrity he never sought. Hot-tempered Mexican gentlemen challenge him to prove his bullfighting prowess, beautiful women throw themselves at him, the real Don Sebastian’s jealous rivals plot against him, and the underworld figures connected to Larceny Nell close in from every side. Ollie, desperately trying to manage the situation with his characteristic bluster and self-importance, only makes things worse at every turn. The comedy builds relentlessly toward the inevitable climax — Stan being forced into the bullring itself to face a real, very angry, very large bull, with Ollie frantically coaching him from the stands in one of the duo’s most physically spectacular slapstick sequences. Meanwhile, Larceny Nell gets her own elaborate revenge involving hot sauce, a collapsing hotel room, and the kind of escalating physical destruction that only Laurel and Hardy can create. The film showcases the duo’s timeless comedic chemistry — Stan’s bewildered innocence and Ollie’s exasperated pomposity — in exotic surroundings that provide fresh visual opportunities for their classic physical comedy routines.
