Plot Summary

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy arrive in the dusty frontier town of Brushwood Gulch with a simple mission: deliver the deed to a valuable gold mine to Mary Roberts, the daughter of their recently deceased friend and prospecting partner. The journey has already provided memorable moments — including the iconic scene of the boys arriving with their mule, Stan riding on the animal while Ollie walks alongside, before Stan and the mule both end up in a stream.

At the local saloon, they ask for Mary Roberts and are directed to the saloon owner, Mickey Finn (James Finlayson), a magnificently villainous swindler who instantly recognises the value of the gold mine deed. Finn presents his own wife Lola (Sharon Lynne) as Mary Roberts, and the trusting Stan and Ollie hand over the deed without suspicion. It is only when they encounter the real Mary Roberts (Rosina Lawrence), a sweet young woman working as a scullery maid in Finn’s saloon, that they realise they have been tricked.

The remainder of the film follows Stan and Ollie’s increasingly elaborate and hilarious attempts to recover the deed from the Finns. Their schemes include attempted burglary, disguise, and direct confrontation — each effort failing in spectacularly funny ways that only Laurel and Hardy could devise. A magnificent sequence involving a window, a block and tackle, and Stan’s astonishing physical comedy abilities produces one of the longest sustained laughs in cinema history. Their famous soft-shoe dance to “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” interrupts the plot with pure joy — one of the most beloved musical moments in all of comedy.

The film builds through a series of escalating comic confrontations to a triumphant resolution where the boys finally outsmart Finn through a combination of Stan’s accidental genius and Ollie’s increasingly frantic determination, delivering the deed to the rightful Mary and ensuring justice prevails in Brushwood Gulch.
