Plot Summary

Rose Carlton, known in San Francisco as the Frisco Doll, is a nightclub entertainer trapped in the clutches of a possessive Chinese crime boss named Chan Lo. When a violent confrontation leaves Chan Lo dead, Rose must flee the city immediately. She boards a ship bound for Alaska, captained by the rough but infatuated Bull Brackett, who falls hard for the beautiful fugitive.

During the voyage, Rose befriends a kindly settlement worker named Sister Annie Alden, who is traveling to the Klondike to run a struggling mission. When Sister Annie dies during the journey, Rose sees an opportunity to disappear completely. She assumes Annie’s identity, dons the missionary’s modest clothes, and arrives in the Alaskan settlement as the new spiritual leader of the mission.

To everyone’s surprise — including her own — Rose proves remarkably effective as a preacher. Her earthy charisma, street wisdom, and genuine compassion draw crowds to the mission and bring comfort to the rough miners and settlers. Meanwhile, Bull Brackett tracks her down, Inspector Jack Forrest begins investigating her past, and Rose must navigate between her growing sense of purpose and the danger closing in from every direction. This classic movie delivers Mae West’s trademark wit in a setting that perfectly plays to her strengths as a performer who could make virtue as entertaining as sin.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This professionally colorized and restored version brings vivid life to Mae West’s Alaskan adventure. The colorization process reveals the contrasting worlds of the film — the exotic opulence of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the gray expanse of the Pacific voyage, and the rugged, snow-dusted frontier of the Klondike — in rich, period-accurate detail. Mae West’s legendary costumes, from the Frisco Doll’s glamorous gowns to Sister Annie’s demure missionary garb, are even more visually striking in color. The rough, weather-beaten faces of the Alaskan miners and the warm glow of the mission hall create atmospheric depth that enhances the film’s unique blend of comedy, drama, and frontier grit. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Klondike Annie was one of the most controversial films of the 1930s, drawing fierce condemnation from newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who declared it morally outrageous and ordered his papers to attack it. The idea of Mae West — cinema’s most unapologetic sex symbol — pretending to be a religious figure was too provocative for many gatekeepers of public morality. Director Raoul Walsh, one of Hollywood’s great action filmmakers, brought visual energy and authentic frontier atmosphere to the production. The film was made under the increasingly strict Production Code, and West had to fight to preserve her signature double entendres and suggestive humor. Despite the controversy — or perhaps because of it — Klondike Annie was a significant box office success. It remains a fascinating document of the tension between Hollywood’s desire to push boundaries and the forces determined to rein it in.
