Plot Summary

Stan and Ollie are members of a colorful band of Bohemian gypsies roaming through a European kingdom ruled by the stern Count Arnheim. When the gypsy queen’s devious lover hatches a plot to kidnap the Count’s young daughter Arline as revenge for a perceived slight, the child ends up being left in the unwitting care of Stan and Ollie, who believe she has simply been abandoned.

The two bumbling gypsies take on the role of adoptive parents to the little girl, raising her within the gypsy caravan over the twelve years that follow. Despite their best and most hilariously inadequate efforts at parenting, Arline grows into a beautiful and spirited young woman who knows nothing of her noble origins. Stan and Ollie’s domestic life within the gypsy camp is filled with characteristic misadventures β€” battles with the irascible gypsy queen’s jealous husband, catastrophic attempts at cooking and cleaning within their cramped wagon, and entertaining encounters with the various colorful characters of the traveling band.

When the gypsies’ wanderings eventually bring them back to the domain of Count Arnheim, the now-grown Arline is recognized and her true identity is revealed. The Count is overjoyed to recover his long-lost daughter, but Stan and Ollie find themselves accused of kidnapping and face the Count’s severe justice. The resolution brings comedy, reunion, and ultimately forgiveness as the truth of the boys’ genuine, if incompetent, care for Arline becomes clear.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of The Bohemian Girl reveals the rich, romantic world of the traveling gypsy caravan in stunning new detail β€” the brightly painted wagons in reds, yellows, blues, and greens rolling through lush European countryside, the vibrant multicolored scarves and flowing skirts of the gypsy women dancing around crackling orange campfires, the deep green of forest glades where the band makes camp, the rich crimson and gold of Count Arnheim’s court contrasting with the earthy warmth of the gypsy encampment, the warm brown wood and brass fittings of Stan and Ollie’s cramped wagon home, the colorful bunting and streamers of gypsy celebrations, the soft golden light of lanterns illuminating evening performances, the bright costumes of the opera sequences, the rich purple and blue of twilight skies over the countryside, and the gleaming silver and white of the Count’s palace interiors. Historical Significance

The Bohemian Girl represents one of the most ambitious and unusual projects in the Laurel & Hardy filmography β€” an adaptation of a classical 1843 opera by Michael William Balfe that successfully blends the team’s slapstick comedy with genuine musical sophistication. The film showcases the range and versatility of Laurel and Hardy, demonstrating that their comedy could thrive in the most unlikely of settings. The production values are notably high for a Hal Roach Studios feature, with elaborate sets, period costumes, and surprisingly accomplished musical sequences. The casting of Darla Hood from the Our Gang series adds a delightful connection between two of Roach’s most beloved properties. Despite the unconventional premise, the film succeeds because the essential Laurel and Hardy dynamic β€” Ollie’s pompous dignity and Stan’s innocent bewilderment β€” remains perfectly intact regardless of the period setting. Through colorization, this unique and entertaining piece of comedy and musical history is preserved for modern audiences.
