Plot Summary

A young married couple, Joe and Loretta Martin, are traveling through the rural countryside with their infant baby during a violent, blinding thunderstorm that makes the roads impassable. Desperate for shelter, they pull off the highway and take refuge in what appears to be an abandoned farmhouse set back from the road. Inside they find dusty furniture, empty rooms, and evidence of long vacancy — until the front door slams open and three armed, dangerous men burst in from the storm.

The Martins have stumbled directly into the hideout of a gang of desperate kidnappers who are holed up waiting to collect a massive ransom. The gang, led by the coldly calculating and methodical Pitch, has kidnapped the young child of a wealthy industrialist and is expecting the delivery of the ransom money at this very isolated location. The kidnappers are already on edge — the police are closing in, the FBI has been called, and the tension of waiting in close quarters with a fortune at stake has frayed their nerves to breaking point. The arrival of innocent witnesses is the last thing they need.

The terrified Martins are forced to remain as unwilling hostages, knowing with sickening certainty that the criminals cannot afford to let them leave alive to identify the gang to authorities. Joe must somehow keep Loretta calm and their baby quiet while searching for any opportunity to escape or signal for help.
