Plot Summary

In sixteenth-century England, two boys are born on the same day who look exactly alike. One is Edward, Prince of Wales (Billy Mauch), heir to the throne of Henry VIII and raised in unimaginable luxury. The other is Tom Canty (Bobby Mauch), born into the most wretched poverty of the London slums and raised by an abusive, thieving father.

When chance brings the two boys together at the palace gates, they are astonished by their identical appearance. On a whim, they exchange clothes — and everything changes. Tom, now dressed as the prince, is swept into court life, bewildered by its rituals and terrified of exposure, while Edward, cast out in rags, is thrown into the brutal reality of life among London’s poor for the first time. The sheltered prince is robbed, beaten, and hunted through the dangerous streets.

Edward’s only ally is Miles Hendon (Errol Flynn), a rakish, good-natured soldier of fortune returned from wars abroad, who takes the ragged boy under his protection — not believing his claims to be the prince but charmed by his spirit and impressed by his courage. Miles fights, schemes, and adventures his way through Tudor England’s treacherous landscape of cutthroats, corrupt nobles, and political schemers to protect young Edward.
