Plot Summary
Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is a small-time American hustler working in London’s nightclub scene, forever chasing the big score that will lift him out of the gutter and into the world of wealth and respectability he desperately craves. His latest scheme — hatching a plan to become a wrestling promoter and corner the London market — is the most ambitious and most dangerous gamble of his life. Harry manipulates the legendary Greco-Roman wrestler Gregorius (Stanislaus Zbyszko), a proud old champion whose love of classical wrestling makes him vulnerable to flattery, and in doing so crosses the dangerous nightclub owner Nosseross (Francis L. Sullivan), a grotesquely corpulent figure who controls much of London’s entertainment underworld. His devoted girlfriend Mary Bristol (Gene Tierney) begs him to abandon his increasingly reckless schemes and build an honest life with her, but Harry is blind to the dangers closing in around him, intoxicated by the possibility of finally making it big. Meanwhile, nightclub hostess Helen (Googie Withers), Nosseross’s sharp and calculating wife, plays her own dangerous game, using Harry’s schemes as leverage in her bitter personal war against her husband. As Harry’s web of lies and manipulations begins to unravel, Nosseross’s terrifying enforcer Kristo (Herbert Lom), the murdered Gregorius’s own son, puts a bounty on Harry’s head that turns every lowlife in London into a potential assassin. Every alliance crumbles, every escape route closes, and Harry finds himself running through the fog-shrouded London night with nowhere left to hide, hunted through cobblestone alleyways and along the dark banks of the Thames by men who want him dead.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Night and the City transforms one of film noir’s supreme achievements into a stunning visual experience. The rain-slicked cobblestone streets of London gain an eerie beauty in the colorized version, their wet surfaces reflecting the neon glow of nightclub signs and the sickly yellow of fog-filtered streetlamps. The original black and white cinematography captured London’s shadows brilliantly, but the professionally colorized restoration reveals the garish interiors of the nightclubs, the warm amber glow of the wrestling venues, and the desperate, sweat-streaked faces of the characters with frame-by-frame precision. The final chase through London’s nocturnal streets is an extraordinary visual experience in color, with Harry’s frantic flight taking him through neighborhoods rendered in distinct atmospheric tones. Historical Significance
Night and the City is widely regarded as one of the greatest film noirs ever made and stands as a landmark of post-war cinema. Director Jules Dassin filmed it in London while fleeing the Hollywood blacklist — he left America just ahead of being named by the House Un-American Activities Committee — and the location shooting gives the film an authenticity and raw energy rarely achieved in studio-bound productions. The bombed-out ruins and shadowy streets of postwar London become a character in themselves, reflecting the moral wasteland through which Harry Fabian desperately runs. Richard Widmark’s performance as the doomed Harry Fabian is considered one of the finest in noir history, a tour de force of nervous energy, desperate charm, and ultimate pathos that influenced countless screen antiheroes who followed. The film’s expressionist cinematography by Mutz Greenbaum and its relentless, breathless pacing have influenced generations of filmmakers from Martin Scorsese to the Coen Brothers. The supporting performances are uniformly superb, with Francis L. Sullivan’s grotesque Nosseross and Herbert Lom’s cold-blooded Kristo creating a gallery of unforgettable villains. The colorization adds a remarkable new dimension to this undisputed landmark of cinema.
