Plot Summary
The Sheriff gets criticised by Caldwell and Nixon for not catching a robbery commanded by themselves and their men, then the Sheriff’s daughter Mary, calls for the help of Hoppy who finds the stolen money and has a plan to capture the whole gang. When Sheriff Martin faces criticism from banker Caldwell and his associate Nixon for failing to apprehend the robbers who actually work for them, his daughter Mary Martin takes matters into her own hands. She calls upon Hopalong Cassidy, the legendary lawman known for his unwavering sense of justice and his skill in bringing criminals to justice.
Hoppy arrives in town and quickly realizes that the criticism against the Sheriff is misplaced. Through his investigation, he discovers that Caldwell and Nixon are themselves the masterminds behind the robbery, using their henchmen to carry out the crime while publicly blaming the Sheriff for incompetence. Hoppy finds the stolen money and formulates a clever plan to capture the entire gang and expose the corruption at the heart of the community.
With the help of his loyal companions Windy Halliday and Lucky Jenkins, Hopalong Cassidy sets his trap. The plan involves using the recovered stolen money as bait to draw out the criminals, while Hoppy works to gather evidence that will prove Caldwell and Nixon’s guilt. As the scheme unfolds, the gang becomes increasingly desperate, leading to a climactic confrontation where justice is finally served and the true criminals are brought to account for their crimes.

Historical Significance
Released in 1938, Pride of the West represents the 17th installment in the Hopalong Cassidy series, one of the most successful and enduring Western film franchises in Hollywood history. William Boyd’s portrayal of Hopalong Cassidy began in 1935 and would continue through 66 films through 1948, making the character one of the most recognizable Western heroes of all time. The series was notable for its higher production values compared to other B Westerns of the era, with better scripts, more complex characters, and superior cinematography by Russell Harlan.
The Hopalong Cassidy films represented a transitional period in Western cinema, moving away from the simpler morality plays of early Westerns toward more sophisticated narratives that explored themes of justice, corruption, and community. Pride of the West, with its plot about corrupt businessmen using their influence to blame law enforcement for crimes they themselves committed, reflects the economic anxieties of the Great Depression era and the popular fascination with stories of honest individuals fighting against powerful interests.
George “Gabby” Hayes, who plays Windy Halliday in this film, became one of the most beloved character actors in Western cinema, his gruff but loyal sidekick character providing comic relief and moral support to countless Western heroes. His partnership with William Boyd in the Hopalong Cassidy series created one of the most iconic duos in Western film history.
The film was directed by Lesley Selander, who would go on to direct numerous Westerns throughout his career, becoming known for his efficient storytelling and ability to deliver entertaining genre films on modest budgets. Pride of the West was released by Paramount Pictures on July 8, 1938, during the peak years of the B Western era, when these films were a staple of Saturday matinee programming and helped define the Western genre for generations of moviegoers. Through modern colorization, this classic Western reaches new audiences who can appreciate its place in the history of American cinema and the enduring appeal of the Hopalong Cassidy character.
