Plot Summary
Bar 20 ranch hand Johnny Travers sends for old friends Hopalong Cassidy and California Carlson. Hopalong Cassidy immediately suspects mine company president Dan Slack to be behind the rustlings and decides to go undercover, with the assistance of Sharon Longstreet and her young brother Bobby. When cattle rustling threatens the ranching operations in the area, Johnny Travers recognizes that the problem requires the expertise of his old friend Hopalong Cassidy. Hoppy arrives with his loyal companion California Carlson, ready to investigate and put an end to the theft.
Hopalong Cassidy’s suspicions quickly fall on Dan Slack, the president of a mining company whose operations have been expanding into the region. Slack’s business interests and the timing of the cattle rustling seem too coincidental to be ignored. Rather than confronting Slack directly, Hoppy decides to go undercover, working with Sharon Longstreet and her young brother Bobby to gather evidence of Slack’s criminal activities.
As Hoppy infiltrates the mining operation, he discovers that Slack is indeed behind the rustling, using his legitimate business as a cover for illegal cattle theft. The investigation becomes dangerous as Slack’s henchmen, including Harrison Brooke and Sam Bucktoe, grow suspicious of the newcomers. With the help of Sharon and Bobby, Hoppy develops a plan to expose Slack’s corruption and bring the rustling to an end, leading to a climactic confrontation where justice is finally served on the frontier.

Historical Significance
Released in 1943, The Leather Burners represents another installment in the Hopalong Cassidy series, one of the most successful and enduring Western film franchises in Hollywood history. William Boyd’s portrayal of Hopalong Cassidy began in 1935 and would continue through 66 films through 1948, making the character one of the most recognizable Western heroes of all time. The series was notable for its higher production values compared to other B Westerns of the era, with better scripts, more complex characters, and superior cinematography by Russell Harlan.
The film was directed by Joseph Henabery, a veteran director who began his career in silent cinema and directed numerous films throughout the 1930s and 1940s. The Leather Burners was released by United Artists on May 28, 1943, during World War II, when Western films provided escapist entertainment for audiences dealing with the realities of global conflict. The film’s themes of justice against corruption resonated with wartime audiences who valued the moral clarity of Western narratives.
The film is based on a 1940 book by Bliss Lomax, demonstrating how the Hopalong Cassidy series drew from literary sources to create compelling narratives. The screenplay was written by Jo Pagano, with the story by Harry Sinclair Drago and Clarence E. Mulford, who created the original Hopalong Cassidy character. This connection to the character’s literary roots gave the film authenticity and depth beyond typical B Western fare.
The film features George Reeves, who would later become famous as Superman in the 1950s television series, in a supporting role as Harrison Brooke. Robert Mitchum also appears in an uncredited role as Henchman Randall, early in his distinguished career as a character actor and leading man. Through modern colorization, this classic Western reaches new audiences who can appreciate its place in the history of American cinema and the enduring appeal of the Hopalong Cassidy character.
