Plot Summary

Joe “Duke” Berne (Humphrey Bogart) was once one of the most feared gangsters in the city, a man whose reputation as “The Big Shot” commanded instant respect from every hoodlum, fence, and corrupt cop in the underworld. But three stretches in prison have taken their toll, and when Duke emerges from his latest sentence determined to go straight, he discovers that the criminal world he once dominated has moved on without him. His old gang has reorganized under new leadership, his connections have dried up, and worse, his beautiful but treacherous wife Lorna (Irene Manning) has been carrying on an affair with his former lawyer Martin Fleming (Stanley Ridges), who has been systematically stealing everything Duke once controlled.

Desperate for money and unable to find legitimate work, Duke reluctantly agrees to participate in one last job — an armored truck heist planned by his remaining associates. But the job goes catastrophically wrong when Fleming, who has orchestrated the robbery through intermediaries, arranges for Duke to take the fall. Framed for a murder committed during the botched heist, Duke is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment despite possessing an alibi he cannot use without exposing the woman who sheltered him — Ruth Carter (Susan Peters), a decent, compassionate young woman who represents everything honest that Duke’s criminal life has denied him. Behind prison walls, Duke simmers with rage while Fleming and Lorna believe they have eliminated him permanently. But when Duke engineers a daring prison escape during a fog-shrouded night, he sets in motion a fierce, violent reckoning that will settle all debts and force him to choose between the vengeance that has sustained him and the chance for genuine redemption that Ruth’s unwavering belief in his decency represents. The film builds to a relentless climax of car chases, gunfights, and moral reckonings through rain-slicked city streets.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The Big Shot was originally filmed in black and white with the gritty, atmospheric visual style characteristic of Warner Bros.’ crime pictures. This professionally colorized restoration brings frame-by-frame precision to the rain-slicked city streets, the harsh grey prison interiors, the neon glow of nightclub scenes, the warm amber of intimate moments, and the fog-shrouded darkness of the prison escape sequence. Historical Significance

Released in 1942, The Big Shot was one of the last pure gangster roles Humphrey Bogart played before his legendary career transformation with Casablanca later that same year. The film represents the peak of Warner Bros.’ assembly-line crime pictures — tightly scripted, economically directed, and propelled by a star whose charisma elevated every frame. It stands as a fascinating snapshot of Bogart at the precise moment when he was about to transcend the gangster genre that had made him famous and become the most iconic leading man in American cinema. Through colorization, this classic Warner Bros. crime drama is preserved for modern audiences.
