Plot Summary
Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson), a tenacious investigator with the Allied War Crimes Commission, devises a bold plan to locate Franz Kindler, one of the masterminds of the Holocaust who has erased all traces of his identity and vanished after the war. Wilson arranges the release of Konrad Meinike (Konstantin Shayne), a former associate of Kindler, hoping the freed man will lead him directly to the fugitive Nazi. The trail leads to the idyllic college town of Harper, Connecticut.
There, Charles Rankin (Orson Welles), a respected professor at a prestigious preparatory school, has built a perfect cover identity. He has ingratiated himself with the town’s leading citizens and is engaged to marry Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young), the daughter of a Supreme Court justice. When Meinike arrives and makes contact, Rankin realizes his carefully constructed life is in jeopardy. In a desperate act of self-preservation, he murders Meinike and conceals the body in the nearby woods, believing the threat has been eliminated.
But Wilson has followed the trail to Harper and begins methodically investigating the town’s residents. With no photograph of Kindler and only fragments of intelligence to work with, Wilson engages in a psychological chess match with the seemingly respectable Professor Rankin. When Wilson discovers that Rankin shares Kindler’s obsessive fascination with antique clocks — particularly the elaborate clocktower mechanism in the town church — the pieces begin falling into place. Mary, meanwhile, gradually uncovers disturbing evidence about her husband’s true nature, and the film builds to a spectacular climax atop the church clocktower where past crimes and present deceptions converge in a deadly confrontation.

Historical Significance
The Stranger was notably the first commercial Hollywood film to incorporate actual footage of Nazi concentration camps, used in a pivotal scene where Wilson forces Mary to confront the reality of her husband’s crimes. Orson Welles took the directing assignment partly to prove he could deliver a commercially successful film on time and under budget after the troubled productions of his earlier works. The film was indeed his most commercially successful picture and remains a taut, expertly crafted thriller. Through colorization, this important postwar thriller has been preserved for modern audiences as both a compelling entertainment and a historical document of how cinema processed the revelations of the Holocaust.
