Plot Summary
Clem Morgan (Trevor Howard), a former RAF pilot, finds civilian life after World War II unbearably dull. The excitement of combat flying has left him unable to adjust to the mundane routine of peacetime, and his restlessness drives him into the orbit of Narcy (Griffith Jones), a smooth-talking black marketeer who runs a criminal gang from behind the front of a funeral parlor. Clem joins the gang seeking thrills, but quickly discovers that Narcy’s operations go far beyond the petty black market — the gang deals in narcotics and violence.
When Clem objects to the drug trafficking and threatens to leave, Narcy frames him for a murder and Clem is sent to prison. Escaping from custody during a transfer, Clem becomes a fugitive — wanted by the police for a crime he didn’t commit and hunted by Narcy’s gang, who need him silenced permanently. Clem is caught between the law that wants to imprison him and the criminals who want to kill him.
On the run through the bomb-scarred streets and shadowy neighborhoods of postwar London, Clem seeks help from people on both sides of the law. Sally (Sally Gray), a woman connected to the criminal world, becomes his reluctant ally, and together they work to gather evidence that will prove Clem’s innocence and expose Narcy’s operations. But Narcy is ruthless and well-connected, and his tentacles reach deep into London’s criminal infrastructure.
The film depicts a brutally realistic postwar London where wartime deprivation has created a thriving black market, where violence is casual and consequences are severe, and where the line between law-abiding citizen and criminal has been blurred by years of rationing and shortage. Clem’s journey through this dangerous landscape builds toward a visceral and satisfying confrontation with the man who destroyed his life.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The colorization of They Made Me a Fugitive enhances the grim postwar London setting with powerful atmospheric detail — the bomb-damaged streets, the dimly lit criminal hideouts, the grey-brown fog of the Thames-side neighborhoods, the rain-slicked cobblestones, and the shabby interiors of wartime-weary London all gain visceral physical presence through color. The visual texture of 1940s London — its dirt, its danger, its damaged beauty — is captured with striking authenticity. Now also available in colour. Historical Significance
They Made Me a Fugitive is widely recognized as one of the cornerstones of British film noir, a cycle of dark, socially aware crime films that flourished in postwar British cinema. The film was notably violent and morally complex for its era, pushing boundaries that shocked and thrilled contemporary audiences. Director Alberto Cavalcanti brought an outsider’s eye to the depiction of London’s criminal underworld, while Trevor Howard’s performance set a template for the morally ambiguous British noir antihero. The film captures the social dislocations of postwar Britain — returning servicemen unable to adjust, widespread black marketeering, and the breakdown of wartime social cohesion — with documentary-like authenticity. Through colorization, this essential British noir is preserved for modern audiences.
