Plot Summary

In Depression-era England, three strangers from vastly different walks of life find their separate routines have become unbearable. Jess Oakroyd (Edmund Gwenn), a blunt Yorkshire factory worker, walks out on his nagging wife and takes to the open road after being laid off. Inigo Jollifant (John Gielgud), a restless young schoolteacher with a gift for songwriting, quits his stuffy boarding school when he can no longer bear its petty tyrannies. And Miss Elizabeth Trant (Mary Glynne), a sheltered spinster who has spent her life caring for her ailing father, inherits a small fortune upon his death and decides to finally see the world.

Fate brings all three to the shabby remnants of the Dinky Doos, a broken-down concert party touring the provinces with threadbare costumes and an exhausted repertoire. The troupe is led by the ambitious but desperate Jimmy Nunn and features the irresistibly talented young singer Susie Dean (Jessie Matthews), whose star quality is wasted in dingy provincial halls. Miss Trant impulsively invests her inheritance to fund the troupe, Jess becomes their loyal stage manager, and Inigo contributes original songs that transform their act.

Reborn as “The Good Companions,” the revamped troupe tours from town to town, their fortunes gradually rising as Susie’s talent attracts bigger audiences. Along the way, romances blossom, rivalries flare, and the companions discover that the bonds forged through shared struggle and shared art are stronger than blood. The climax takes the troupe to London for their make-or-break West End debut, where everything they have built faces its ultimate test.
