Plot Summary

Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) is the American daughter of a convicted Nazi spy who has just been sentenced to prison for treason against the United States. Haunted by her father’s betrayal of the country she loves, and publicly shamed by association with his crimes, Alicia drowns her pain and fury in alcohol and reckless parties, throwing herself into self-destructive behavior as if punishing herself for sins that are not her own. Into this chaos steps government agent T.R. Devlin (Cary Grant), cool, handsome, and inscrutably controlled, who recruits her for a dangerous mission: travel to Rio de Janeiro and infiltrate a group of Nazi conspirators who are continuing their deadly work in the shadows of postwar Brazil. Leading the cell is the urbane, intelligent, and genuinely charming Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains), a man who has secretly been in love with Alicia for years. Though Alicia and Devlin fall deeply, passionately, and undeniably in love during their mission preparation — their famous extended kiss remains one of the most sensual sequences in cinema history — duty demands a devastating sacrifice. Alicia must seduce and ultimately marry Sebastian to gain access to the group’s secrets, particularly a mysterious substance hidden in wine bottles in Sebastian’s cellar. Devlin, torn between his overpowering love and his rigid sense of duty, watches with cold, barely concealed agony as the woman he loves sacrifices her body, her dignity, and her heart for the mission he is running. When Sebastian discovers that his adored wife is an American spy — a realization engineered by his terrifying, domineering mother (Leopoldine Konstantin) — he and his mother begin slowly and systematically poisoning Alicia rather than face the murderous wrath of their Nazi colleagues upon learning they have been compromised. As Alicia grows weaker and more disoriented with each passing day, trapped in a gilded cage of luxury and poison, Devlin must finally decide whether to save the woman he loves or protect the intelligence operation that could expose an entire Nazi network.

Historical Significance

Notorious is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and stands at the absolute pinnacle of Hitchcock’s romantic thrillers. The film contains what was then the longest kiss in cinema history — an ingeniously choreographed sequence in which Grant and Bergman speak, nuzzle, and kiss continuously for over two and a half minutes, cleverly filmed with interruptions to circumvent the censorship board’s rule limiting screen kisses to three seconds. Claude Rains received a richly deserved Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his remarkably sympathetic portrayal of the villain Alexander Sebastian, a man whose genuine love for Alicia makes his betrayal and his terrified desperation heartbreakingly human. Hitchcock’s innovative camera work throughout the film — including the legendary crane shot that descends from the top of a massive staircase across a crowded ballroom to an extreme close-up of a key hidden in Bergman’s clenched hand — remains among the most studied and admired shots in film history. The screenplay by Ben Hecht is a marvel of construction and emotional intelligence. The colorization brings magnificent new visual beauty to this undisputed masterpiece of cinema.
