Plot Summary
When a murdered man is found dumped on the New Orleans waterfront with a bullet in his back, US Public Health Service officer Dr. Clinton Reed is called in to examine the body and makes a terrifying discovery: the victim was carrying pneumonic plague, one of the most contagious and lethal diseases known to medicine. With less than forty-eight hours before the infection could spread from the killers to their contacts and then explode into a devastating citywide epidemic, Reed must convince the skeptical and hard-nosed police captain Tom Warren to help him track down the murderers — who are also unwitting carriers of the deadly plague.
The criminals, led by the cold and menacing Blackie and his volatile, unpredictable partner Fitch, have no idea they are infected. They continue their dangerous activities across the city, meeting contacts, shaking down informants, and moving through the crowded docks, restaurants, and boarding houses of the French Quarter, unknowingly leaving a trail of potential infection behind them. Reed and Warren forge an uneasy partnership, the doctor’s scientific urgency clashing with the captain’s streetwise pragmatism as they race against the clock through the steaming streets, crumbling warehouses, and rat-infested wharves of New Orleans. Every hour that passes brings the city closer to catastrophe, and when Blackie realizes someone is hunting him, he becomes even more dangerous — a cornered killer who doesn’t yet know that the real enemy is already coursing through his own bloodstream.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
Panic in the Streets was originally filmed in black and white on location throughout New Orleans, giving it a documentary-like authenticity rare for Hollywood productions of its time. This professionally colorized restoration enhances every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the murky green-brown waters of the waterfront to the warm terra cotta facades and wrought-iron balconies of the French Quarter. The humid, subtropical atmosphere of New Orleans comes alive in color — the steamy outdoor markets, the weathered wooden docks, and the neon-lit bars that line the waterfront district all gain a tactile reality that intensifies the film’s mounting tension. The contrast between the sterile clinical whites of Reed’s laboratory and the grimy, saturated tones of the criminal underworld visually reinforces the film’s central conflict between science and violence, order and chaos. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance
Released in 1950, Panic in the Streets was a landmark achievement that helped pioneer the use of real locations in American cinema. Director Elia Kazan, who would go on to create masterpieces like A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, chose to shoot the entire film on the actual streets of New Orleans rather than on studio backlots, creating an atmosphere of sweating, urgent realism that influenced a generation of filmmakers. The film won the Academy Award for Best Story and established a template for the “ticking clock” thriller that Hollywood would return to countless times. Richard Widmark brought coiled intensity to the role of the desperate doctor, while Paul Douglas provided a perfect counterbalance as the weary, skeptical cop. The film is particularly notable for marking the screen debut of Jack Palance, credited here as Walter Jack Palance, whose towering menace as Blackie immediately announced a major new screen presence. Zero Mostel, years before his Broadway triumphs in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Fiddler on the Roof, delivered a memorably twitchy dramatic performance as Fitch. Through modern colorization, this groundbreaking thriller reaches new audiences who can experience its raw power and understand why it remains a cornerstone of American crime cinema.
